This DUmmie lives in KC, MO, certainly there are some farms nearby that could use a tractor driver, someone to clean the feedlots, spread manure (other than the shit on DU), feed livestock, etc.  Hell, some will offer room and board if they REALLY need help.  Just don't expect any of this "9-5" shit working on a farm, "5(am)-9(pm)" is more the norm.

The problem seems to be the notion that one should have the right to work in one's preferred field AND to receive a 'living wage' for it.

Some people are more suited for some fields than for others, regardless of which fields they would like.
Some fields simply don't pay enough, that's not a problem with the economic system it's just how things are.

In about 12 years, this is the only statement from the dump I've ever agreed with.

Since this last downturn in the economy, and looking at last years sales figures, he' right: People have become rigid tightwads, and they do expect everything for ridiculously cheap.

I can't stand it when people have a completely, abhorrently unrealistic expectation as to what something should cost..I'm talking people assuming a service that could easily cost thousands should be just a couple hundred bucks...Not even having the common sense to do the math in their heads and find out if it would be even worth it to them to do it for what they expect to pay.

When people get tight with money, rather than tightening their belt or learning how to reprioritize their budget, they continue to want to have all the things they've had before but they want it to cost less since they have less to spend. While I can empathize with them on some level, overall you couldn't be more right. It's very frustrating. Sometimes you've got to sit down with them and point out what it would take for them to start from scratch and do what you are already set up to do. Sure, they might be able to do it less expensively, but at what cost to their time and efforts they need to be directing towards other matters?

I had a quote into The Harvard Club down in Boston.  As in THE Harvard club. 

GM and I go back and forth a little, and I assume he's serious.  At the end of about a week and half of going back and forth, he proposes we cut the original job down from $3200 to $400 and he'll see if he likes it or not and maybe do more next year.  I counter offered with some cutbacks and $2K.  He said he can't spend over $1000.

I told him, professionally, that $400 isn't even worth the trip down from NH, and (somewhat unprofessionally) he might think about what his own time is worth to him the next time he waste's another contractor's time in such a way for what he needed done (he had reached out to us initially).

When the General Manager of an Alumni club of one of the richest universities in the world is flinching over $1000, then you know times are tight.

Here's the thing, DUmbasses...

A degree means you finished school. It doesn't indicate anything else. If one was a creepy looking incompetent boob before earning a degree, the odds are good that one still is afterward - and most hiring managers / human resource people can figure that out during the interview.
