Long before Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio rose to power by denouncing the city’s inequality, children like Dasani were being pushed further into the margins, and not just in New York. Cities across the nation have become flash points of polarization, as one population has bounced back from the recession while another continues to struggle. One in five American children is now living in poverty, giving the United States the highest child poverty rate of any developed nation except for Romania.

The ranks of the poor have risen, with almost half of New Yorkers living near or below the poverty line. Their traditional anchors — affordable housing and jobs that pay a living wage — have weakened as the city reorders itself around the whims of the wealthy.  This bodes poorly for the future. Decades of research have shown the staggering societal costs of children in poverty. They grow up with less education and lower earning power. They are more likely to have drug addiction, psychological trauma and disease, or wind up in prison.

It is no place for children. Yet Dasani is among 280 children at the shelter. Beyond its walls, she belongs to a vast and invisible tribe of more than 22,000 homeless children in New York, the highest number since the Great Depression, in the most unequal metropolis in America.

Amazing.  So catering to a bunch of rich liberals is no way to run a city.  What insight.

If they think it's bad now, wait until DeBlasio and the libtards in the City Council run the Wall Streeters off.   :lmao:

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

What am I missing here? I know poor families who work hard and raise decent human beings so how does this happen other then they are exposed to this somehow and normally through the parents ie drug use, sexual abuse, etc either tacitly allowed or directly given from the parents. I hate when places like this won't tell the whole truth because if they do it means that a lot of these assholes should not be able to keep their children and raise them on the public tit because they are not only doing a poor job, but directly responsible for the raising of damaged adults because of the neglect and abuse they have heaped upon their children from birth. Sorry, this issue is a particular pet peeve of mine

Mine too.  Kids need to feel loved and secure in a two parent home.  They need structured routine and role models.

I view a lot of the street kids like feral animals.  They show no respect for rules, laws or even a conscience for bad behavior.  The parents themselves were probably raised the same way. It's generational, and I suspect we are on the third or fourth generation of this problem and it's getting worse.

New York city has one of the highest tax rates in the US, a majority Democrat political leadership, high rates of single parents, high rates of abortion.  You know, when you tell a kid they can be legally murdered until some special age, don't need a dad, can't make it without government intervention, and make sure they know they'll fork over 70 cents of every dollar they earn, it's no surprise that most of them can't seem to grow into responsible adults.   :thatsright:

Democrats have the solution: NYC needs more bridges.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Well, thunder thighs Hillary told us it takes a village to raise a child. This moron could possibly be our next President. God help us all if that happens.
