Even though I've lived in Florida all my life so far (excluding various duty stations while in the Air Force and Navy), I cannot recall ever seeing the state name abbreviated as 'Flor', 'Flori', etc., but rather it's always been FL, or Fla.
I have wondered why the people of New York (state) are seemingly embarrassed by the names of all the cities/towns in that state other than New York City. Any place other than that is almost invariably referred to as 'upstate New York.'
When things happen in other states the town/city is named, as in Sanford, Florida rather than upstate Florida.
