Last week, was arguably the worst of Barack Obama’s presidency. If the wheels are not to come off it altogether, this coming one will need to be among his best – starting on Tuesday night with his address to the nation about Syria.

It is hard to understand how an instinctively cautious president in his fifth year could have manoeuvred himself into such a dismal corner. But his largely self-charted route lends little confidence that he can easily escape it.

The White House insisted Monday that it was legally able to launch a strike on Syria without congressional approval even as it intensified its courting of lawmakers to support military action.

 White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler told the New York Times that a strike would be lawful under both domestic and international law. She told the paper that the president could strike because of the “important national interests” surrounding the use of chemical weapons, even without Congress or United Nations approval.

 Ruemmler contended that while the Syria situation “may not fit under a traditionally recognized legal basis under international law,” it would nevertheless be “justified and legitimate.”

Not sure if it's illegal or not.  Several talking heads on both sides of the aisle have said that Obama doesn't need their permission, and he has a hidden motive for putting it to a vote.

His motive isn't really all that hidden: he's hoping to get the approval so that when, not if, our involvement gets Americans killed, he can blame them for giving him permission.

For decisions such as attacking Syria in which there's an entire shitload of stuff ready to go wrong, Barry will blame Congress should they be stupid enough to go down Barry's Highway.
