Virginia gun crime drops, as state's firearms sales soar

Amid calls nationwide for stricter gun control laws, Virginia is experiencing a unique trend: the state's gun-related crime is declining but firearms sales are increasing.

Firearms sales rose 16 percent to a record 490,119 guns purchased from licensed gun dealers in 2012, according to sales estimates obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

During the same period, major crimes committed with firearms dropped 5 percent to 4,378.

Areas with more restrictive gun laws have higher crime rates. Think Chicago, Washington, DC, or Detroit.

I liked this little snippet from the article:

Quote
“Criminals don’t want to get shot by law-abiding citizens that they don’t know has a gun when they try to attack them,” Van Cleave said. “It’s a very tricky situation for a criminal, because if you attack somebody with a gun, that’s a very personal thing you’ve done to them. So the criminal not knowing how the person is going to react actually works in our favor.”

Skittle punk found that out the hard way.   :fuelfire:  :fuelfire:

Things won't change in Chicago even though Illinois will issue CCWs, Chicago probably won't.

Is the new Illinois law a "shall issue" or a "may issue" one?

I'm pretty sure that it is "shall issue" .  However , by finagling some of the requirements, Crook county and Chicago could probably dodge issuing most of them.

What does the firearms training course consist of?

The required 16-hour firearms training course will include range qualification time and shall cover the following:
Firearm safety
The basic principles of marksmanship
Care, cleaning, loading, and unloading of a concealable firearm
All applicable state and federal laws relating to the ownership, storage, carry, and transportation of a firearm
Instruction on the appropriate and lawful interaction with law enforcement while transporting or carrying a concealed firearm.
All applicants must pass a live fire exercise with a concealable firearm consisting of:
A minimum of 30 rounds
10 rounds from a distance of 5 yards, 10 rounds from a distance of 7 yards, and 10 rounds from a distance of 10 yards at a B-27 silhouette target approved by the ISP.

No reciprocity with other states.
Are out-of-state Concealed Carry permit holders granted reciprocity in Illinois?

No. Out-of-state residents who want to carry a concealed firearm on his/her person must obtain an Illinois Concealed Carry License to lawfully carry a concealed firearm in Illinois. In order for out-of-state residents to be eligible for an Illinois license, their state’s concealed carry license laws must be substantially similar to those of Illinois. The Illinois State Police will establish rules to identify the elements necessary to meet the substantially similar requirement.

However, out of state residents are granted a limited exception to lawfully carry a concealed firearm within a vehicle if they are eligible to carry a firearm in public under the laws of his or her state or territory of residence and are not prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm under federal law. This rule becomes effective immediately.

If the non-resident leaves his/her vehicle unattended, he or she shall store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle in accordance with subsection (b) of Section 65 of the Firearm Concealed Carry Act.

I wonder if there is any requirement for cities or counties to allow gun ranges and trainers set up shop.

And yet I'm having a "discussion" with a friend from HS on FB regarding how **WE'RE** the suckers for providing "record profits" for gun companies for the last five years because we've been told the liberals are coming for our guns.

He claims nobody is trying to take our guns, but doesn't like to hear about the spate of gun laws passed (or attempted to pass) in the past year, and Obama's own words regarding guns.

Facts are inconvienent things to liberals.  I suggested if we wanted to curtail purchases of things that were harmful to people, we could start with gasoline, since it contributes to global warming and 40,000 people die each year in car crashes.  He REALLY didn't like that.

A reversal of gun crime statistics where civilized people are armed against the trash?  Criminals worrying about whether or not a potential target may be ready to shoot their asses?

The Hell you say!

Why, one might come to the conclusion that Heinlen was correct after all...
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

John C Calhoun, "Disquisition on Government", 1840
