Is it time to just accept that our society has collapsed?

Our major cities are dystopian wastelands. Our government is run by a small handful of the ultra-rich. Our constitution is in shreds. Hey, it was a fun 237 years, but maybe it's time to admit...the party's over.

Of course, I heard on Fox "News" that it is all Obama's fault.

It's a big campfire, so again, only a few primitive comments, selected at random:

10. Crap flame catcher.

It was a question. I live between Boston and NYC. I visit both regularly, and I love them both. I wasn't speaking of specific cities, as if Boston falls, so falls Boston Falls (even if there was such a place as Boston Falls). Step outside your tiny mind and try to understand what I'm talking about.

Our government has ceased to function in any meaningful capacity. Major cities are collapsing (no, Boston isn't, and I'm sure we can point to lots of others who are not). Our federal government has turned into just a big spy center. We're parading petty spies to the media even as the government spies on us. You can stand your ground and shoot someone who looks like a bad guy you saw in one of your nightmares. If you work your whole life and pay into a pension or health care, you can be told to **** off, because some rich people want your money. Seriously? I'm just posting flame bait?

Bite it, then.

14. +100

Of course I wasn't serious about it being O's fault. But you are 100% correct that the manufactured collapse has been a long time coming.

29. I'm not going to delete the thread, but am I going to dis-own it.

It seems to be evoking some interesting responses, and I enjoy reading them. But I admit my OP wasn't clear in its subject. No, of course I don't think our entire country is a dystopian wasteland. Hell, I live in some damned beautiful country, with two of the best cities in America nearby. I probably should have drawn out the thesis more, but screw it. Enjoy responding.

4. In Oceana they still tried to get to the truth

The state still functioned, but not democratically. That is where we are. Possibly that is where we have been for a while, but they could not remove the veil from our eyes completely until the full "Security State" was put in place. They are safe enough from any actions we may wish to take.
Hey, PeePee, where'd ya go??  Come on back, lad.  We're done with you yet.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

They sure like to use the word "dystopian" a lot.   :whatever:

I'm confused.  Does dystopia occur before utopia, or does utopia have to arrive first before it can become dystopian?   :???:

Funny how things were going pretty damn well right up until the beginning of 2007. What happened then, something pretty big IIRC.

That's right the evil democrat party came to power in the congress. One year after that the country took a nose dive.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

This after electing the smarterest, and most holy, savior in the universe?  Twice?!?

Nah, not possible...

Feel free to

McGrath.
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

Pretty bitter, huh?

But you have to consider McGrath's situation. After being fired from his cartooning job nearly two years ago, he's beginning to realize his unemployment is permanent.

He has no marketable skill whatever, and is far too indolent to look for physical labor.

Yet despite his sloth, he must surely feel the shame and humiliation of depending upon his wife for every dime of his family's livelihood.

Little wonder his view of America is so warped.

Turn out the lights, the party's over......was a great country tune.

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin
