Dennis the Menace needs some 'life advice'

I need some life advice from the Lounge re some future paths.

Last edited Wed Jul 24, 2013, 02:14 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

Must be life advice week in the Lounge - full moon after all.

So, I guess the best way to frame the ? is directly. It's not a secret on DU that I had a pretty big life crisis last year - I was told I was bipolar. This has proven not to be the case at all. I have, officially in medical records, a very different diagnosis, PTSD. Which makes sense, because my childhood was Hell, extreme emotional abuse and domestic violence - let's just say I saw things and lived through things no one should ever go through. But I survived that, and I survived the events of 2012. I have found that I am much stronger than I thought. I'm tough.

I have been extremely proactive in my "recovery" from this. It has been a rough road at times, the events that transpired made me feel, at times, like the scum of the Earth, like some kind of criminal. But, I have fought back, hard, really hard. One thing that really helped me was having a plan to change what wasn't working
for me, to be really proactive. Keeping busy, feeling like I am always making progress has been a real lifeline. Had I gone home and sat in a chair and brooded after all of this, I believe I literally would have blown my head off out of depression in short order. Because at the time, I thought my life was over, that I was going to be unemployed and unemployable, would be cast out of home and family, and left medically bankrupt.

I know better now. I am beginning not just to make peace with my new life, but to really embrace it. And, I definitely know that moving forward, progressing, is vital. So, I will finally get to the question, after all of this narrative.

Should I go back to college and enroll in a graduate program in my field? It would definitely increase my earnings potential? And intellectually I know I am up to it, I already have 2 bachelors, one with a 4.0 gpa, and a professional certificate and specialty certificate in my field.

I wouldn't do this now, probably a year from this fall. And I would do it part time while still working full time at my current job.

But, I have a few concerns, too. It will be expensive. I would be over 50 when done. And, I don't want to over-stress myself, although I think I have proven to myself I can handle it

So, opinions??? Thanks!

The best piece of 'life advice' I can ever give is to step away from the DUmp, and never to listen to anything said there.

Asking for life advice from the DUmp is like asking Steve numbers how to please a woman.

I'm sure the reason he didn't have a 4.0 G.P.A. in the other bachelors was that the wymyns studies department automatically deducts marks from men - which is only fair, of course.

But I bet his period cycled right with all the DUmmie wymins in his class.

It's going to be great when it all comes crashing down on him.  Thus proving the doctors were right (bipolar not PTSD).  He'll be hiding in the women's shitter bawling within a month.

Actually, you can have both. But I'm always skeptical of DUmmies because they exaggerate with such gusto. They wrap it around themselves and let it define them as if it were a badge of honor. The DUmmie version of winning an Oscar.

Oh come on now. Steve numbers knows how to please a woman...all the women that he stays away from are pleased.

Dennis the Menace is a professionally-diagnosed lunatic.

His relative calm in this post just means he has not opened a credit card statement for at least the last six months.

One of my good friends from college is bi-polar, finished undergrad with a 3.8 GPA and then got an MBA.  And he's a lib democrat, even though he's from the great state of Texas.

I am starting to see some correlation here...

Seems like this is the only type of "woman" that Stevie numbers might be able to please:

Sadly Marv, the "kids" today have a different definition of PTSD.  I always liked this George Carlin rant, on the softening of language:

Sign up for internet classes, Dennis, that way maybe you can continue them from stir when you're finally sentenced for that 2012 business, or your probation gets revoked.

OK, let me get this straight. Your childhood was Heck. You saw and endured horrors.
THEN WHY ARE YOU STILL LIVING WITH YOUR PARENTS?!!!

Further, let me educate you on something Dennis. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is what soldiers get. They get it after the seeing the very real horrors of war. No matter how bad your childhood was you have not seen horror.

Dennis you do NOT have PTSD. Mommy and daddy telling you that you can't have a pony is not abuse. You live in Mommy's basement because she loves you and takes pity on your insanity. I'd have kicked you out long ago.

Bottom line Dennis: Warriors get PSTD, You are just a pu$$y. (PS, speaking of cats, Underground Panther is looking for a new roommate to kick out after a few months. you're in like flint!)

The last horror Dennis the Menace endured was when he opened a bunch of credit card statements after having been afraid to face his bills for nearly a year.

He was horrified to discover his cards were all maxed out, and the experience gave him PTSD, poor thing.

The fact remains that he is an officially, professionally diagnosed lunatic.
