Financier Marc Rich dies in Switzerland

Jun 26, 6:42 AM (ET)

By JOHN HEILPRIN

GENEVA (AP) - Marc Rich, the trader known as the "King of Commodities" whose controversial 2001 pardon by President Bill Clinton just hours before he left office unleashed a political firestorm of criticism in 2001, died on Wednesday. He was 78.

Rich died of a stroke in a hospital in Lucerne, Switzerland, near to his longtime home, according to the Marc Rich Group. His Israel-based spokesman, Avner Azulay, said Rich would be buried in Israel on Thursday.

Rich fled from the United States to Switzerland in 1983 after he was indicted by a U.S. federal grand jury on more than 50 counts of fraud, racketeering, trading with Iran during the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis and evading more than $48 million in income taxes - crimes that could have earned him more than 300 years in prison.

Rich remained on the FBI's Most Wanted List, narrowly escaping capture in Finland, Germany, Britain and Jamaica, until Clinton granted him a pardon on Jan. 20, 2001 - the day he handed over the keys to the White House to George W. Bush.

This was the most controversial of the pardons, IIRC.

I wonder if Bubba is happy that his lips are sealed, or concerned about what kind of dirt may come out as loose ends that aren't being watched anymore.

Au contraire, dead men keep pristine records and the reading of a will always brings out the sh*t in families

Wills are kept private in trusts.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Hmm by family, I've included any nieces an old man takes to dinner, shopping and is smart enough to have a continuity of care plan

Will, schmill.  There are always loose ends like compromising documents in the hands of friends, associates, and extended family about things the deceased was involved in, which surface once a guy dies, and which have nothing whatsoever to do with probate, that have been sat on while the deceased was with us, either intentionally or through neglect.  The big question is whether any of them are in the hands of anyone who was motivated to help Rich but doesn't give a shit about Bubba.

Hmm, your comment reminds me of a news story that mentioned an actor generously bought the complete estate of some guy who worked in Hollywood and I remember thinking that was so sweet, till I later read a gossip link that mentioned a guy who bought the complete estate of a dead man because he reportedly was present when the actor was involved with a classic dead hooker/party scenario...could never remember who the guy was

Lib altruism from ulterior motives.
