DETROIT (WWJ) - The number of people calling for Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr to step down after making some controversial comments continues to grow.

Congressman John Conyers on Thursday joined with local NAACP President Rev. Wendell Anthony and over two dozen others to demand the EM apologize to citizens and then resign his position of power in the city.

This comes after, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the state-appointed city leader characterized Detroiters as “dumb, lazy, happy and rich.”

Detroit political consultant Greg Bowens — an ex-journalist and press secretary to former Mayor Dennis Archer — told WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas Orr’s comments have “become legend.”

Kevyn Orr is Black and they are calling him to step down over this.

DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr is raising eyebrows across the country with an interview he gave to the Wall Street Journal where he said, “For a long time the city was dumb, lazy, happy and rich”.

In response, veteran journalist Micheline Maynard, a Forbes contributing writer and lecturer at the University of Michigan, wrote that, “While it’s true that many people valued a good job more than a high school or college degree, Detroiters can barely be accused of sitting on their hands.”

Detroit is bankrupt and they are worrying about this???????????  :???: :mental:

They don't want to be helped because they (the city politicians) don't want to lose power or authority.  They created this problem and have gotten rich doing so.

I've watched several news stories on Detroit over the last few months and it is pathetic what they are NOT willing to do to help their city.  John Stossel did a good story about a week ago and basically the city's politicians don't want to cut back on anything and they don't want to sell assets.  THEY are screwing the people of Detroit hard!

The burned out crack houses, trashed and wrecked property lots, and completely gutted and abandoned structures (you can't call them "homes" any more) -- some of these are going for $1 plus back taxes.

If the back taxes ain't to much, that could be some cheap farm land.....of course you'd have to fence it in and sell hunting rights for shooting the trespassers but that would just be another source of income.

Isn't there something like 40k empty homes?  I've heard too that some areas don't have any street lights and the cops won't go there.

Population has declined from over 1,850,000 in 1950 to 701,000 in 2013, a loss of over 60%. Of that number, 1,400,000 of the 1,600,000 white people in Detroit after WWII have fled.

Unemployment ranks No. 1 in the 50 most populous cities in the U.S. at 23.1%

70,000 abandoned buildings, 31,000 empty houses, 90,000 vacant lots.

The Detroit News reported that over half of Detroit property owners didn't pay property taxes in 2012, resulting in a loss of $131 million or 12% of the city's general budget.

A 2012 Forbes report named Detroit as the most dangerous city in the United States for the fourth year in a row.

For an even more stark presentation, I urge you read Charlie LeDuff's book Detroit: An American Autopsy.
