If you got asthma (my doc would love it if I followed my own advise) try to stay indoors. Believe it or not your AC can filter some, but i avoid running mine. If you can't...a wetted down bandana works over nose/mouth to filter some of the crap. It can be the difference.
 
Now, after the fire is over...especially if you were under quite a bit of smoke, even if not chasing brush trucks...highly consider taking your vehicles to the mechanic and changing those air filters. Trust me on this...they can get real clogged with it and kill your gas mileage.
 
We cover fires, so during the summer I change that filter more often, but while sensible people evacuate, I drive towards them. How else do we get impressive photos? Now if I could get a 600 mm lens I could get *some* distance.

She is doing the people of Colorado a favor by telling a bunch of people who are watching a fire destroy their homes that a fire is destroying their homes (just in case there is any confusion about what is happening to their homes and the cause of it).
