In 1857 in India, the British East India Company issued new Model 1853 Enfield muzzleloading rifles to the local conscripted Soldiers, known as
sepoy. The bullets were wrapped into cartridges of greased paper, which were rumored to be made from pig and cow fat. The offense to the Hindus and Muslims among the
sepoy is noted as one of the causes of the Sepoy Rebellion, which resulted in the dissolution of the British East India Company and the institution of British colonial rule.
