Poverty...it's not sexy

But when you discuss SS, it's poverty, when you talk Medicare, it's poverty, union busting, poverty...

It is quite frankly around you, all around you.

I will spend the day again among working poor trying to improve their condition. I will spend my day among people who are being heroic, and will help to start change.

But they are poor, so really, it is not sexy...

Nadin must be dirt poor then.

1. and we're lucky

.. here in the US of A. Our poverty looks like middle class to so much of the world. So much of India could only dream of being poor in America. I hope one day we can solve not only our own poverty, but worldwide poverty.

This DUmmy stepped in it. He suggested that poverty here is still better than poverty in a lot of other countries.
I don't see poor people in too many other countries with an iPhone.

And a tool of opression. Havinf an empty fridge, and not being able to afford more than cheao stsrches is low level malnutrition, for example

Yet the poor in other countries would kill to have a fridge and would dine like kings on cheap starches.

6. Really? One of five American children go to bed hungry every night.

Malnourished children do not grow up to be healthy adults.

You need to visit some of America's poorest areas before saying they 'look like middle class to so much of the world'. Maybe we could solve the problem of poverty in the rest of the world if we had some laws in place that required that major Corporations like Walmart eg, abide by the same labor laws they would have to abide for here when the outsource jobs to third world countries and pay them so little wages they cannot feed their families.

'We' may be lucky, but there are too many Americans who are not.

I'm sorry but, there is no excuse for children to go hungry. Parents should do what it takes to feed their kids even if it means giving up their iPhones. I know the horror.

5. So, you're hiring

and paying fair wages?

You won't many DUmmies who can hire and pay fair wages. Typically people who live off of freebies can't afford to hire people.

7. I imagine if Nadin had a business she would pay fair wages. But that would

be a drop in the bucket of what is needed to address poverty. Or do you think that in order to try to do something about poverty everyone needs to start their own business? Not everyone can afford to do that.

But those who can, like Walmart, eg, should have to pay a livable wage. One thing people can do is try to change the laws so that Big Corps do not get tax breaks or subsidies when they go to other countries and pay workers so little they can barely survive. Electing candidates who, eg, would vote to apply the same labor laws to American Corps who go to third world countries, as they would have to abide by here. This would either force them to pay more to their work force abroad, or hire Americans and pay them a livable wage.

 :whatever:

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

BS, you cracked reporter.  Poor kids can get two squares a day in school.  All the parents have to do is provide something in the evening.

I raised four kids on a very limited food budget.  I can also match the cost and nutritional value of wholesome food to anything you can possibly dream up in your make believe world of facts.

 :thatsright:

You miss the point dipshit. Many people in the world would love to be 'oppressed' by cheap starches. People in N. Korea are boiling grass blades for Pete's sake. The point is people have food, whether the make good choices with what they do have is on them. I would actually submit that it's a total lack of cultural and overall education when it comes to cooking from scratch that compels people to choose 'cheap starches'-probably a dose of laziness too. Not to mention when people do cook from scratch, they often cook 'ethnic/cultural' choices/techniques that are high in fat and starches. This was often a holdover from roots that were steeped in the days of REAL poverty when you wanted to fill your belly with something that would hold you through whether that was potatoes, rice, biscuits, the leftovers of meat, etc and you ate what was available to you. It's utter bullshit that the only thing availalbe to people are cheetoes and ding dongs. Hell, I hardly buy those anyway BECAUSE of the price, not to mention the shitty nutritional content. Why would someone pay 2.50(on sale) for a bag of cheetos and 3.00 for a bag of powdered donuts and 2.00 a piece for micro meals when they could get a bag of onions, potatoes, head of lettuce, tomatoes, 2 bags of frozen veggies for 10 bucks. Throw in another 5 and you could get a pretty good size pack of whatever meat is on sale. The first won't really even make any meals--they are just high fat snacks and the second will feed a single person lunch and dinner for 2 or 3 days. Breakfast you say? I see oatmeal on sale for a buck all the time--Oatmeal--1.00--will last at least a week. Loaf of bread and peanut butter--3.50 to 4. bucks--will last more then a week. Throw a bunch of bananas in for the week at about 2.00. Throw a couple of baked potatoes in there and put some canned tomotoes that are seasons on them and I have about 25 bucks there for a week of eating healthy. Remember the cheatos and the mico meals were about 15 and would get someone through maybe 2 or 3 days and thsoe aren't even complete meals. you lie Nadin and in the places it is expensive ie New york and such--those are leftist created hell holes who should ask why they are paying as much as they are. Here in flyover land I just bought a gallon of milk for 1.99 and cheese for 1.79 for an 8 oz block. Hell I can even get a container of feta crumbles for a 1.99 at Audis.

Today my daughter made veggie burgers(3.00), roasted red peppers(.99), feta crumbles(1.99), wheat thin roll(1.49), salad(.99), vinagrette dressing(negligible as it's used sparingly and can last a month)....if I was on my own, this would serve me 4 dinners for just over 8 bucks--extremely healthy at that. I could throw the breakfast/lunch combos I mentioned for another 10 and eggs and make meals for the WEEK for under 20 bucks. A little creativity and willingness to eat the same thing for a couple of days is all that is required. If it means eating decent food that tastes good and is good for you, I'd do that and change my menus up each week to match what I find on sale.

'We' may be lucky, but there are too many Americans who are not.

and imo those children should be removed immediately. With all the assitance out there to feed a child--school lunches, breakfast, and food stamps/WIC, there is NO reason any child should be hungry. But there answer still is to throw more money at the PROBLEM which is the adult raising the child. How about put them into a responsible home instead. I would guarantee that 20% have adults who are either too lazy(for whatever reason--drugs, irresponsible, etc) to feed them or uses the assistance they receive to get cash to pay for other things the adults WANT rather then the food to feed their children. Shameful! And Liberals still don't seem to get the difference. In some REAL poverty stricken countries, those people would jump for joy to be able to feed and educate their children--in this country, many many times children who are malnourished are the result of impoverished (in values, no money) parenting, not a lack of actual food or money to purchase the same. So tired of this smoke and mirrors crap, along with the obvious moving the goalposts that was done in the thread when they got called on their shit.

One look at Nads and you know she never missed a meal.

Still not sexy.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Now stop that. However would she have gotten all that excess food she ate to any of the starving children in American. Stop those right wing talking points! She ate it so as not to be wasteful...of course, that's why she overate.
