Senate GOP ponders ceding power to President Obama
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:41:45 AM »
Days before the March 1 deadline, Senate Republicans are circulating a draft bill that would cancel $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts and instead turn over authority to President Barack Obama to achieve the same level of savings under a plan to be filed by March 8.

The five- page document, which has the tacit support of Senate GOP leaders, represents a remarkable shift for the party. Having railed against Senate Democrats for not passing a budget, Republicans are now proposing that Congress surrender an important piece of its Constitutional “power of the purse” for the last seven months of this fiscal year.

As proposed, lawmakers would retain the power to overturn the president’s spending plan by March 22, but only under a resolution of disapproval that would demand two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate to prevail over an Obama veto.

I think it's stupid to give him any more power than he already has. However, this would also serve to show people, once and for all, his priorities and incompetence. Come Mar 8, his plan would either have spending cuts entirely to DOD, which the public generally would hate for betraying our servicemen, or it wouldn't be done, demonstrating his inability to do his job.

All in all, still a stupid idea.

Obama has said that he doesn't want the responsibility for making the cuts.

I kind of think it's a brilliant move in a way.  If they can make it so Obama has to make the cuts, then he either shows where his priorities truly lie, or he is forced to cut things that will piss off his base.

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand this makes Barry responsible for once. On the other hand I don't want him with any more power even if only for this.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

On the surface, it looks like it makes Obama responsible for where things are cut, but then again, these things have a way of blowing up in Republican faces.  They have fallen for these gimmicks before and were pwned.  Republicans better wake up to how they get played.

Obama has said that he doesn't want the responsibility

That right there is the heart of the matter.  And he's done it more through actions than actual words. He wants the title and the ass kissing and the access that comes with the job...but not the responsibility.

Like Sergeants that only want the stripes so other people have to call them "Sarge"...but God forbid you tell them they have to pull CQ or Staff Duty.

Hi,

You know there are lots of oxymorons, words that don't go together.  Jumbo Shrimp, etc.

I am beginning to believe that "adult congressman" should be on the top of the list.  Damn it!  We pay these guys big bucks to make decisions as our representatives.  To cede responsibility to the president is nothing more than being as inept as he is.  Any member of congress, republican or democrat who would embace this concept shoud be fired, it is basically saying they cannot or will not do their job.

Disgusting is right. Bonehead and McConnell keep caving in over and over, and the Democraps keep piling crap on top of their heads. They are wearing it for a hat now, and are so concerned about their precious posh jobs. It is all about politics, self preservation and screw what conservative voters want. These mealy mouth wimps are playing a dangerous game cause a bunch of folks might just stay homes or vote for another party rather than Dem and Dem lite for the 014 election.

I totally agree but how can we fire these so called representatives of ours when the low information voters keep re-electing them.

Yet people say to vote them out, like that'll work after they have all the supporters they've bought.

Yet you would hand them the responsibility to impose limits upon themselves?   :lmao:
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

"Adult congressman" may be an oxymoron, but add a couple of letters and it is speaking truth to power in many cases, adulterous congressmen.

Hi,

While they may not be adults, they are unfortunately not totally stupid.  I really find it hard to imagine any congress imposing term limits.  It would have to be a constitutional amendment and they would do all they could to block it.
