Best treatment for split nails?

I'm not talking about having a great manicure - i'm talking about nails that are splitting to the quick! I have trouble picking up small items like pins and needles.

Apparently split fingernails aren't a problem for most primitives, as only one shows up at this campfire.

1. A magnet

After 25 years of having my hands in hot water and surgical soap constantly at work, my nails were trashed. They all have vertical cracks that spit off anything that grows much past the edge of the cuticle.
 
So I keep them short. If I'm sewing and drop pins, I scoop them up with a fridge magnet. It's cheap and dirty, I can always find it, and it works like a champ.
 
If I catch someone looking down her long blue nose at my unmanicured nails, I just tell her it's a manicure for hands that have to work for a living.

It's not the hot water and soap.

It's decades of saturation in illegally-obtained opiates.

Were it not for that, Warpy would still be a nurse.

Your're more accurate with the clippers when they're in your right hand, clipping the nails on your left hand.
