Does anyone know the total popular vote for the House?

Yes, the repubicans won the House, thanks to gerrymandering.

But what was the total number who voted for them and what was the total number who voted Democratic?

1. Yes.

53,952,240 votes were cast for Democratic candidates in the House. 53,402,643 were cast for Republicans.

2. It isn't just gerrymandering.

Right now republicans are winning lots of split districts and democrats are winning lots of lopsided urban districts. We pile up the votes, but not the reps, they pile up the reps, but not the votes. Some of that is the misfortune of losing so many state legislatures in 2010, just in time for redistricting based on the 2010 census, but a lot of it is the demographics of the urban rural cultural divide.

^^^lopsided urban districts; where the machine bosses create votes out of thin air.

Anyway.

Does anybody know what the new congressional districts in Maryland, drawn by a Democrat governor and Democrat state legislature, look like?  Are they compact and geographically rational?

And what about California and Illinois?  Are they compact and geographically rational?

As you can clearly see, there is no rhyme or reason to it.

You gotta be kidding me.

That's Maryland's congressional boundaries?

That adds a whole new meaning to "gerrymander."

Aren't they constitutionally mandated to be as compact and geographically rational as possible?

These are the people who think that you have to pass a bill to know what's in it and that spending a massive amount of money will balance the budget.  They probably believe those districts are rational.

Drawn by a Republican governor and Republican state legislature:

Obviously meant to disenranchise minorities.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Those are indeed the condgressional boundaries, sir. And they make no sense whatsoever. It was done basically to ensure that a Republican couldn't get elected. We call it the O'Malleymander.

Obviously meant to disenranchise minorities.

I believe the big guy, Omaha Steve, was moved from the 2nd district into the 1st district, Lincoln.

Bellevue was split between the two; I'm not sure what side of the line he's on.

It kind of changed the 2nd district (Omaha) from white to light pink.

It kind of changed the 1st district (Lincoln) from light pink to dark pink.

The 3rd district is, inevitably, very dark red.

By the way, you see that very large county up at the top, Cherry County.  It's bigger than Connecticut, and has 6,000 people.  dutch508's cattle baroncy, his spread, is the northwestern corner of that county.

franksolich is in one of the Rhode Island- or Delaware-sized counties in the northeastern part of the state.
