Changes in a Christmas Flight Itinerary.
My parents, who live in California, have stopped flying at age 88. They still had enough miles, though, for one more trip, so they decided to use them for my solo trip at Christmas for a visit. My wife, who normally goes, too, needs to be here for her mom this Christmas, since her mother will be alone and needs assistance.

So, I'll be winging my way from the MSP airport to the Burbank airport. Why Burbank? Because everyone in my family refuses to drive to LAX any more to pick people up. The traffic sucks that bad. So, that leads to some interesting issues. There are a bazillion Delta flights between MSP and LAX a day - Maybe even an brazillian. There are exactly none from MSP to Burbank. Commuter/short haul traffic

So, I'm flying out on Christmas day - MSP to SLC, where I get to cool my heels in the Salt Lake City airport for four hours before catching an SLC to LAX flight. That will give me time to explore that fascinating airport three or four times, and still have time to read 50 Shades of Gray on my wife's Kindle, which I'm taking, since it has more diverting reading on it than my own, and I want to know what she was giggling about. Not that bad, really, and SLC still has a smoking area on the lower level, inside the secure zone. Very reasonable of them.

On the 29th, I'm returning. That's more complicated. So far, there have been three changes in the itinerary. From a one-stop through SLC, with a 5 hour wait, it has changed twice. Today, I looked it up again, and found that I'll be leaving Burbank at 7:20 AM, on a flight to SLC. Then, an hour after I arrive at SLC, I get on another flight, this time going to Detroit. After an hour there, I finally board a flight to MSP, where I'll arrive at 6:40 PM. That's how it is so far.

But who knows? If things change or if some scheduler has a migraine, I may end up flying to SLC, then Detroit, and then Atlanta, where I'll board a red-eye to MSP Anything could happen.

Flying on someone else's miles around a holiday is apparently likely to end up with considerable confusion before you actually get anywhere, it seems. Who knew? But...my parents wanted to gift me with the trip, so that's what I'll do. Whatever the route, I'll be there to see them. At 88, it's never certain if it'll be the last visit. I could just buy my own ticket, fly to LAX and rent a car to drive the hour to my folks' house. But, they wanted to pay for the flight. I'll be smiling when I get off the plane, for sure.

Pulled this over just for the bolded part. Why am I not surprised.

I'm curious though, do you know why your return flights keep on changing?

See the bolded part above, plus, you can bet it was a call before, strings attached ticket.

2. Why don't you just fly to LAX and hail a cab to Burbank
They can pick you up there and you wouldn't have wasted the better part of 2 days.

Almost, not quite. Check on airport shuttles first, or maybe just rent a car.
(unless the drivers license is suspended)

What!?!?!?! You expected a dummie to pay it's own way or something?   

What gets me is the dummies parents actually want to see it. Maybe they want to tell the dummie that due to the election result, there will be no inheritance.

I've done a lot of flying this year and I never have a difficult time finding a flight.  I've had a couple of longer layovers (2-3 hours) to save money, but nothing worse than that.  I have never had an airline change my itinerary on me.

The only time I've ever had a problem flying was when I missed my 5am flight out of Baltimore.  I got home almost two hours after my regularly-scheduled flight but flying standby through O'Hare sucked major balls.  I would have had to get up at 3am to make it to the airport on time (did I mention how much I hate Garmin?).

Some offer further discount if the customer will accept some changes in flts.
Customer should be well aware of this when booking said flt.

Well Frank I thought that myself but didn't say anything. The parents may be thinking that their time on this Earth is winding down and would like to see their offspring a last time. If it was me, and I hadn't seen my parents in a while, I would be on my knees thanking God that I could. Typical dummie though, it is all about he/she/it.

Something tells me that the dummie doesn't give two shits about it's parents unless there is free money involved. Normal people would be grateful they could see their parents... but as we all know, dummies are not normal people.

We'd go over to the next farmers and steal their melons in the wee hours of the morning. The farmers would sleep on their porches with shotguns full of rock salt to "deter us". They'd shoot at us, never really hit us although my brother got nailed one night in the back of his legs.

As I got older I sometimes think that the old guys enjoyed it almost as much as we did. It was kind of a WV tradition. They got free labor and we got to pull one over on the old guys. Wasn't like there wasn't enough melons to go around.

I checked Deltas website and you can fly from MSP to SLC and then to BUR on the 25th.

I agree with the parents.  LAX anytime, but especially on a holiday weekend sucks donkey balls, especially if your loved one is coming in on Delta (Terminal 5.)  I know if I could afford it when I lived there, I'd fly out of John Wayne or Ontario.

And Super Shuttle to the valley (shared ride) is about $40.  Either that or your cheap DUmmie can rent a car.  Tons of places to rent a cheapo car.  Or maybe he doesn't want to pay that $3.75/gallon, the cheap ****er.

Bottom line, there's no way in hell I'd make anyone go to LAX to pick me up, let alone someone nearly 90 years old.

Senator Byrd saw to it that anyone who was ever near a coal mine could get "black lung" checks for the rest of their lives, virtually no questions asked.

There are families who for the past several generations have had no problem qualifying every child for SSI on mental grounds.

There are families who for generations now have lived in trailers supplied and regularly replaced by the federal governmnet.

WV, mainily due to Senator Byrd, is different from the rest of the country.

It was an unbelievable achievement for the democrat party to convert WV into a red state.
