Linda Coleman, the democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, said Wednesday that the race is too close to call.

Coleman, in a fundraising email to supporters, said that with more than 50,000 provisional ballots left to be counted, the current margin is too close to call the race.

Unofficial results for the North Carolina State Board of Elections on Wednesday showed Coleman with 2,160,375 votes, compared to Republican Dan Forest's 2,171,317 -- a difference of 10,942 votes.

Linda Coleman is fighting for her race. Today's NC Board of elections shows her with just 11,000 votes behind, and while this news story says there are 50,000 provisional votes, the letter she just sent to her supporters say there are more than 75,000 provisional votes yet to be counted. Her office is calling voters to make sure they check the Board of Elections website to confirm their provisional ballots were counted.

The election was held on November 2, 2004, with the initial count showing Gregoire trailing Rossi by 261 votes. However, a legally mandated machine recount reduced that lead to only 42 votes, then a hand count that was requested and funded by the state's Democratic Party gave Gregoire a 10-vote lead. Following a State Supreme Court ruling that allowed several hundred ballots from King County to be included, her lead was further increased to 130 votes

The day after the November election, Republican Sen. Norm Coleman had won his re-election to the U.S. Senate, beating challenger Al Franken by 725 votes.  Then one heavily Democratic town miraculously discovered 100 missing ballots.  And, in another marvel, they were all for Al Franken!
