Me too.

But in response to jty, sometimes when you live in a rural area (as I do), said rural areas become a dumping ground for heartless assholes who think they're doing the dog/cat/whatever a favor and simply open the car door and deposit the critter outdoors to fend for itself.

Most of these end up dead whether through starvation, or predation, or usually being hit by a car.

In some stupid, mindless way these people think they're being humane when, in fact, they're being cruel. Pisses me off when I see this kind of stuff.

Our second dog came to us in this way. She was emaciated, tick-ridden, filthy, hungry, thirsty, and needed a spay. No collar, no ID, it was pretty clear she and her siblings and the dam had been dumped. We found homes or otherwise turned over the others to animal control (the dam wound up being adopted by a family in the KC area) and we have the smartest, bestest pupper EVAH as a result.

Two of the cats I had were "throwaways" like you've described, Eupher.  One was tossed out of a car window (at least they stopped the car -- jerks ) and the other was just left to fend for himself when the owner moved away.  How people can be so cruel, I just can't imagine.  But both cats were loved and taken care of for the rest of their lives.

Back in Illinois when we lived out in the country (I'm no city kid) friends and family would often find a cardboard box full of puppies or kittens along side a road on top of many other strays left behind like you mentioned. My grandmother had an outdoor shed dedicated to a few stray cats, she would lock them up at night and let them out during the day. They had plenty of food, shelter and heat in the winter.

My mother still has a 17 year old cat that she rescued as a kitten. We caught the mother & father with live traps, paid to have them fixed, and turned them back loose....a neighbor had way too many cats...so we fixed the problem... :-) We had the blessing of a deputy sheriff. The lady would not provide proper food and water, and eventually legal action was taken against her.  We had a local dairy farmer that would take all strays to keep mice out of his grain, yet the cats would find their way back, even miles away.

Also during the foreclosures many people simply took off and left their pets here in Nevada, pretty sad. The good news is Nevada makes animal abuse a FELONY....but of course if you hit your wife in the face, that would just be a serious misdemeanor...  :thatsright:
