GM to build an electric Cadillac (Volt). What?

GM to build an electric Cadillac, the ELR

'The Cadillac ELR uses the same platform and plug-in technology as the Chevrolet Volt.'

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- General Motors said it will start production late next year of the Cadillac ELR, a luxury version of the Volt, it's high-profile electric vehicle.
Like the Volt, the ELR will have both an electric motor powered by a lithium battery as well as a gasoline engine to generate electricity once the battery runs down. The Volt can travel about 40 miles on pure electric power.

The Cadillac ELR is the first expansion of the Volt powertrain and platform to another model that is available for U.S. customers. GM (GM, Fortune 500) is already making the Holden Volt and Opel Ampera using the Volt's powertrain technology but those models are for export to 21 other countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.

All of GM's extended-range-electric vehicles will be built at the same Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant. GM said Tuesday it would invest $35 million in the plant to build the ELR there.
Despite sharing a platform and technology, the ELR will look very different from the Volt. It will be a two-door coupe, rather than a four-door sedan.

What is GM thinking? 'I know we can't give the volt's away (And we are losing $30,000 on every one sold), but hey, lets make a luxury version of it; give it the cadillac symbol, and call it the ELR'... What a bunch of stupid. I have to admit that it is a sexy car. It kinda reminds me of the CTS-V. Look for this thing to cost around $60,000 to $70,000 - Then with the Volts real price being around $75,0000, this ones real price will easily be over $100,000. They won't be able to sell it either.

The only people buying volts are older folks that have money. Upper middle class retired or almost ready to retire.  Make a chevy a caddy and charge more those same ppl will still buy.  Probably as good an idea as you can have re: the volt flop.

You never know. It may do better. But I will not be surprised if it flops, and it will not make me want to buy any GM stock.

Are you serious?  The Volt is based on the same car GM used for the Malibu, an old design from the Korean-imported Daewoo.  If anything, it's just going to be another badge-engineering job of the Malibu Volt.

I have a friend with a current-model Malibu.  I suppose it's nice... it can't possibly be worse than the previous GM design.  Talk about a nose-heavy pig... THAT was a horrible car.  I doubt it's nearly as nice as the current Cadillac ATS.  Not with half a ton of batteries stuffed in the ass.

The Cadillacs from back then were boats. Riding them was like floating on air. The technology and design has changed drastically over the years.

I looked at one of those back in '84 (before I bought a Lincoln).  It was a Chevette with a Cadillac emblem glued on.  No thanks, GM.

What's the problem? They have plenty of our money.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

It makes a twisted sort of sense, a sensible but suitably expensive enviro-status car for the urban or retired liberal.  It may well out-sell the Volt, taking any Government Volt sales out of the comparison anyway - the biggest government fleet users like DOD and DOJ choke a bit on that Caddy luxury car label, though GM'll probably still sell some to State and a couple of other offices like the White House that can buy 'status' cars without giving their fiscal wienies a heart attack.
