Cops& the mentally ill
I posted this in GD
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021404881

What bugs me beyond the obvious that the cop that shot the amputee is an asshole, is more and more the mentally ill are being shot by asshole cops, tazered or treated like shit.We all know mentally ill people are not prone to violence more than non- mentally people.Yet cops go trigger happy on us.Why? I chalk it up to more than just ignorance about mental illness.

There are too many cops getting off on the power, and since everyone thinks mentally ill people are crazy,we become a scapegoat because as a population of our vulnerability. And this is scary. Cops were nasty to me when they escorted me to the  hospital a few years ago.

Well, duuh.

1. I was ridiculed and chastised on another MI forum for saying the same thing.

When I was diagnosed last month, one of the things I was really afraid of was my loss of legal rights. And of my fear that having this diagnosis could make me a "marked man" in Michigan, my name could in theory end up in the law enforcement database maintained by our state police.

I posted about that fear on another forum and was told by multiple respondents that I was simply being extremely paranoid.

Honestly, of all places, I had thought that people on a mental illness forum would have understood. Maybe I'm missing something?

DUmmy Denninmi has been added to the nut database of every law enforcement agency in America.

2. i think it is fear. which, of course, is the purpose of being a cop- to cover up your fear.

as soon as someone acts in a way that isn't what the cop predicted, it's freak out time.
they are all big babies deep down, and they will die to keep it deep down. which makes killing to keep it deep down a piece of cake.
mho, anyway.
DUmmy mopinko has clearly done time.

The only time I've ever felt threatened involved a crazy person.

In the perceptions of others, franksolich has actually been in dread physical peril too many times to count, but as I wasn't aware of it myself and came to no harm, it all just went right over me.

But there was this one time a guy about 18 years old, but a whooping couple of inches taller than me (I'm 6'3", no dwarf) approached me, having wandered away from his mother.  He looked normal, other than his height and his weird eyes.

Looking at me with those dead eyes, he kept repeating something over and over again, the same words ("this is ****ed, this is ****ed, this is ****ed, this is ****ed," or something similar with that).  Even though I was just a harmless person merely standing there, he made sudden threatening moves at me.

I grabbed a moderately-sized crowbar that was at hand, but then his mother came over and calmed him down.  He withered into a sobbing wimp.

After she bound him inside the car, she explained to me that he was mentally-ill, and had been spending the holiday (the 4th of July) with the family.  He lived in a nuthouse in South Dakota, and resented that he had to go back.

Whew.  A close call, because that overaged child could've creamed me, easily.

I for one think there's very sound and valid reasons for cops to be apprehensive about the mentally-ill.

I know if I were a cop and spied the subway cat, I'd be hoping I was wearing brown pants.

My one true encounter with a certifiably mentally ill person:

I was managing a restaurant in S Florida. There was a woman we called Crazy Annie. She always wore running suits, usually pink in color. She would occassionally walk into the foyer, mumble and then do an about face and leave.

You learn to accept things like that.

Then one day I was in the back office sorting out the day's receipts when a waitress told me Crazy Annie was in the corner booth and talking loudly enough to upset the other customers.

I went to the booth and told her that she had to leave.

She insisted that she could not. Not would not, but could not. After a minute or so of the back and forth I sat down and told her as firmly but non-threateningly as I could that she absolutely had to leave.

She leaned forward and told me in no uncertain terms, "I know who you are. I know you're Robert Kennedy and you were never assassinated. I know you've been living in a CIA safe house and I'm going to make sure the world knows it."

My one thought was, What happens next?

After another few seconds she got up, vowing under her breath that this was not over.

The uncertainty of how they may react to any given stimuli is the most unsettling part.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

That sounds about right.

It must have been Release Day at the mental hospital at Metro Center, but I was waiting for the bus many years ago when a bunch of shabbily-dressed people came shambling across the green to the bench I was sitting on.  Next thing I knew, a dozen people mumbling between themselves tried to fit on that same bench all at once.

They didn't fit, but dammit, they sure tried.

They might have.  It looked like a reunion from the cast of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest'.

I would've asked if any of the femme ones looked as if they'd stuffed ice-cubes inside their brassieres.

I've never looked at a map to see if there was a hospital up there.  It was definitely an odd experience (this was before internet access was free and widely available).  Metro Center used to be landfill that now has county and private offices built over it.  Every once in a while it will let loose with a nice big fart... you don't want to be in the area when it does.

There was also the time my money-grubbing slum landlord in North Carolina let some certifiably crazy woman move in to the house we were renting from her.  It was a mess, but you couldn't beat it for free entertainment.  I can't believe I lived there for as long as I did.

Here's my encounter:

I was at the central bus station in downtown Austin (I had flipped my jeep, and the tow truck driver took me that far), and I was waiting for my uncle to come pick me up. I was watching the TV in there, when this scrawny homeless crazy guy starts yelling, "LOOK AT ME!! YOU THINK YOU'RE TOUGH???" and a few other choice words I don't remember, then just all of a sudden walk off.

The depot guy rolled his eyes and said something to the effect that he's harmless and does that to everyone.

Way back in the day I used to work for the public safety department for a university here in Indianapolis.

I worked graves, and I liked it, because it is close to urban Indy and the way the IPD worked back then had a tendancy to drive some of their customers towards us

Anyway, there is a garden area that is off limits after nightfall. For me, at the time, it was an area that I took great interest in making sure that it was clear.

I wanted to catch students that were in there after hours so that they could be talked to by higher authorities and made aware of why it was a bad thing to do.

I had a way that I could move through the gardens and not use my maglight (thats all I had for defense) and not be detected until it was to late.

One night I was on mobile patrol and found a car parked just outside the gate.

I looked into the car and found that it looked as though it was being lived in except that most of it was porn and sex toys.

I contacted dispatch and gave them the licence number, had another officer bring out a wheel boot and get IPD rolling.

Once the boot was on (I wanted to make sure that car wasn't going anywhere) we went down into the gardens.

Now these gardens are in the shape of an elongated horseshoe, we worked our way down the righthand side of the horsehoe and started around the bend and then we both smelled perfume.

As we continued around we came to the bottom of the lefthand side of the horseshoe which had a concrete bench with its own surrounding plants and shrubs.

As we continued to approach we could tell that there was someone there so once we got closer we both lit this person up with our flashlights and found a male wearing womens laungerie.

Stockings and the belt thing that holds them up, panties, bra and a brunett wig.

The only thing this guy could do was run directly away from us so we followed. The problem was that there was a canal, not very wide, but it was there in the direction he was running.

Much to our chargrin he dove in and swam like crazy. We chose not to follow and instead decided to move further up the lefthand side to a bridge.

We couldn't talk directly to IPD but dispatch could so I ran after him as hard as I could and the other officer ran with me but he was mostly concerned with talking with dispatch, discribing what was happening so that IPD had a picture of what was going on.

Anyway, we didn't get him and it took IPD some time to get him but it didn't really matter, we had his car.

As it turned out the guy was an administrator at the Plainfield youth correctional facility.
