I live in rural America where the school is locked and there is only one way in - a door under surveillance camera, locked, and you have to be buzzed in.
The students practice lock down drills with local law enforcement several times a year (all schools in MA do).
Large urban high schools are all locked also, with police officers on duty. We have a full time police officer at our high school also.
Can they do it? sure. Is the staff prepared? yes. Students are also.
