Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, Roll Call reports.

Last month, Giffords, who was shot in the tragic 2011 Tucson shooting, reached a milestone on her path to recovery. In August, she announced that she was moving back to Tucson with her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly.

News that Giffords will make a surprise appearance at the Democratic convention in Charlotte on Thursday comes on the heels of the former congresswoman launching her new political action committee, Gabby PAC.

I'm happy that she is recovering, but her recovery would probably progress more quickly without being trotted out to garner sympathy for the party.
