A TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR

COSTA RICA / NICARAGUA / EL SALVADOR / HONDURAS / GUATEMALA /
PANAMA / MEXICO

FOR ALL OTHER AREAS COVERED BY THIS BULLETIN... IT IS FOR
INFORMATION ONLY AT THIS TIME.

THIS BULLETIN IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. ONLY
NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE
DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA AND
ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0437Z 27 AUG 2012
COORDINATES - 12.7 NORTH 88.5 WEST
DEPTH - 54 KM
LOCATION - OFF COAST OF CENTRAL AMERICA
MAGNITUDE - 7.3

EVALUATION

IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES IN THE REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES
TO HOURS. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE
ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE
TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL GAUGES NEAREST THE REGION AND REPORT IF ANY
TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED. THE WARNING WILL NOT EXPAND
TO OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC UNLESS ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED
TO WARRANT SUCH AN EXPANSION.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Why I also said, not that Gaia is angry or anything like that.

Last night the Ring of fire looked particularly active with a few 6+ all over the pacific rim. It was interesting, since I have not seen that kettle that active in a while.

Oh and CAL Ema just released an alert for a possible (10%, not that high) chance of a larger quake...need to go get water... I used my last gallon yesterday.

They are technically on the same side of the ring of fire, but too far from each other to affect each other to the point you'd have this happen.

Even if we had a major quake in front of Seattle (expected, overdue), that will not trigger one in SoCal. This would be about the same distance.

It could happen, which is what happened here, where you have multiple hits all over the ring, which is what happened last night. We had a few large quakes around the pacific rim, 6+ to be exact, and Te swarm here in California.

Every time there was a tremor that could be felt in SoCal, the local news stations would all go to "EARTHQUAKE PANIC" mode, much like they'd do "STORM WATCH 2012!!!" if three drops of rain fell and send the station asshole out in it to do a remote from some shitty location.

Of great humor to me was a lot of the stations would have remotes with one of the USGS types out at CalTech, who the ex used to call "SeismoDyke."  I still crack up on that one.

If Nads had any idea how many tsunami watches and 5+ earthquakes there are in the world each and every year, well...
