It took more than six years from the time neighbors began lobbying for their worn-out playground in San Francisco's Dolores Park to be replaced to the grand opening celebration two months ago that drew hundreds of kids eager to scale the new climbing structures, glide down the new slides and bounce on the colorful rubbery ground.

It took vandals just one day to mark the new playground with graffiti, and only a few weeks more for instruments in the whimsical music garden there to be damaged, most notably with the removal of six of the 14 metal keys from the popular xylophone.

"It burns me up," said Tim Wirth, who serves on the steering committee of the Friends of Dolores Park Playground and whose children helped design the $3.5 million overhaul. "So much effort went into getting the playground built, so many kids are using it now, and then it gets vandalized."

Doug Woo shares that frustration. As president of Friends of Duboce Park, he and his neighbors have worked with the city on park improvements - creating a dog-play area, the nifty Scott Street walking labyrinth and most recently a new children's playground that opened May 19 and was covered with graffiti on May 20.

"It shows a total disregard and disrespect for all the hard work that's gone into improving the park," Woo said. "It's a real slap in the face."



If you think about it, there is pretty much ONE LESSON that liberals refuse to learn or acknowledge: PROPERTY RIGHTS MATTER.

Whether it's a public space or MONEY, property rights matter.

DUmmies: what the taggers did to the skate park, 0bama would love to do to the United States: make it so no one owns anything, so anyone can do whatever they want to anything they want.

Wouldn't this be great for the "Broken Window" school of economics. These so called vandals are just saving or creating public employee union jobs.

With scrap metal prices like they are... fences, goalpost, metal seats, trash barrels... anything metal is being stolen around here....including kiddie park equipment....and the Obama supporters keep asking for more parks and DUmmie politicians keep building them for the dope head thieves.

There are no metal pieces in any of the new parks I've seen... they're all plastic and mulch so the parents don't sue the city when their snowflake stubs a toe.

Considering this is in San Fran, where "Popeye" Pelosi reigns supreme, one of the most liberal cities in the most liberal state in America, THESE ARE YOUR PEOPLE!

This cannot and was not done by conservatives.  How do I know?

You would have better luck finding a virgin in a whorehouse than finding a conservative in San Fran.

As someone in CU pointed out on this story, if such a playground were proposed in Detroit, it would never even be built to begin with, as thieving street vermin would steal all the equipment/ supplies before ground was even broken.
