Less than a year after Diddy's son, Justin Combs, committed to play football at UCLA, state taxpayers are calling on the well-heeled freshman to turn over his $54,000 scholarship to students who need it more.

In an interview with CNN, education contributor Dr. Steve Perry defended Combs' merit-based scholarship, saying he earned it fair and square. At the Upstate New York prep school where Combs recently graduated, he maintained a 3.75 GPA while playing cornerback for the football team.

"He's done what he needs to do to be successful and in 'Ameritocracy' we have to accept that no matter who your father is, whether he be rich, poor or absent, that you can in fact be successful on your own merit," Perry said.

There's no denying Diddy can afford to send his son to college. The entertainment mogul was recently named the wealthiest artist in hip hop by Forbes Magazine, so far earning $45 million in 2012.

But as Perry pointed out, Combs' scholarship is awarded to student athletes specifically and isn't exactly a free ticket to a four-year picnic. Combs will be required to train 40 hours per week as well as attend classes full-time.

Hmmm....

I say let the kid keep his scholarship.  He earned it under his own merit.

Yup. The whiners who are bitching about him giving up his scholarship clearly expect free handouts, just as the Occupoopers do. But then again, we're talking Califunny, right?   :whatever:

Athletic scholarships are quite hard to get. It's much easier to get an academic scholarship.

I agree and it says alot about the boy that he didn't just suck off his dad's riches and is making his own way.

It's got to be hard on the offspring of the rich in that every accomplishment they may achieve in life is clouded with suspicion of "Wonder how much daddy's/Mommy's wealth had a play in the event".
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

The state of California (University System) is going to make money off of this kid in ticket sales. The scholarship is his.

Hope he doesn't turn out to be like Obama's son, Trayvon.

Exactly!  Diddy is self-made, so I would suspect he expects the same of his children.  Also, the outraged outragers are assuming this is taxpayer money.  It's not, it is from the athletic department, which is not taxpayer funded.
