That is because Tea Partiers a) recognize that most police officers are decent enough people just doing their jobs, and b) acknowledge that police officers deserve their respect.
Occupy freaks and other such liberal protestors do no such thing, ten are genuinely surprised when the cops aren't exactly very patient with them. It's the equivalent of a hiker in the woods throwing rocks at a bear, then being completely surprised when the bear responds to it by mauling them.

Why in the world would any city invite, much less want, the democrat convention in their town?

They got off light. Had they tried that shit in South Korea they would have had to deal with at least 6 rows of high level black belts in Tae  Kwon Do and then another platoon of guys with sticks and shields to just get to the warm up pen.
