Rick Santorum has won Tuesday's Republican presidential primary elections in the U.S. southern states of Alabama and Mississippi, solidifying his status as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney, the leading candidate in the race.

Santorum narrowly won both staunchly conservative states, with Newt Gingrich finishing second and Romney coming in third. The former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania told supporters that his campaign was “about ordinary folks doing extraordinary things” and that he was “defying the odds” with their help.

He said it was time for conservatives “to pull together” so they can take on Democratic President Barack Obama in the November general election.

Gingrich had hoped to win in at least one of the two states to keep his candidacy viable. But the ex-U.S. House speaker told supporters at a late-night rally that he will ignore calls to drop out of the race, describing himself as a “visionary” leader who can restore the country.

Gingrich may be a visionary but he lacks grounding.

Well, I'll support, with plugged nose, the most conservative guy still standing.  Meaning it ain't Romney.  Not one of the politicos I wanted - all rock ribbed real conservatives - jumped into the race for prez.  The only one that did run whom I actually fully trusted was Bachmann.  But now I'm down to about my third or fourth choice - Santorum.

He could be very useful in some capacity in the new Republican administration.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

In my dream administration, he'd probably be SecEd, until I closed down DoEd.

This is going to go straight to the convention. I think this will be the first time in my life time that they wil pick a nominee during the convention? When was the last time that did that?

That would not be good news.  No candidate until 60 days out?  Say hello to 2nd term Obama.

I look at it the other way...if we had a nominee now, Obama would be hammering on him day in, day out, until November.

This way, if he doesn't know who to focus on until June (or August), he's got that much less time to dump on the GOP nominee, whereas the GOP nominees can and should start to be focusing on the last four years under the SCOAMF.

The turn out for some of the primaries hasn't been that great....but maybe the right new blood at 60 days out would energize everyone. Plus Obama and MSM would have less time to dig into a new candidates past. Obama and MSM would probably start making up "fake but accurate" stuff that could prove more damaging to them than to their opponent.

Actually, I've been hearing that the turnouts have been near record levels, and that the ObaMessiah's Propaganda Ministry have been actively downplaying it, in an effort to depress general election numbers.

Agreed. Furthermore, even as Barry and his Ballbusters are amassing and creating all manner of negative attack ads, preparing them for two potential nominees occupies resources that could be spent elsewhere. Additionally, dumping all of them on John Q. Public 60 days out can come right back and bite Barry in the ass.

People are ALREADY tired of the endless sniping and backbiting. And the heavy season isn't even here yet.

I wonder how it would be with a Romney/Santorum ticket? I heard a guy mention that on Hannity the other night. I wouldn't mind it.

I would. I can't stand Romney, who personifies the words "slick" and "glib".

If he's the nominee, he'll get my vote. But until then, NFW.

GOP?  1976.

It was a close one in 1976. Neither Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan had enough delegates.

And Carter ended up winning. I hope it isn't a repeat this year.

It occurred when the economy was in a sorry state like right now. Jimmy Carter won because he rode on anti-Beltway sentiment and painted himself as an "outsider". Also, it occurred after Watergate Scandal and President Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon.

That makes you wonder how it will turn out, as it looks like history is repeating itself.

And why does history repeat itself ?
According to Santayana, those that fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.
