Public performance of our national anthem...
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:02:21 AM »
..I was in town today and they had a stage set up for some street entertainment.  They started by singing the national anthem and I took a look around to see how people were responding, most just stood silently, a few were singing quietely,  no hands on heart on anything like and some were just ignoring the performance talking and eating hot dogs etc.  Oh well...

Do you fancy yourself a genius who can spout this sort of stuff straight off the cuff spontaneously or do you have to work at it, staying up nights with a pad and pen?

FOAD

BTW~ If you couldn't figure it out for yourself (obviously), milling about on the streets in the afternoon is not the habit of people who have jobs, etc. The disenfranchised, drifters, layabouts, hippies, bums and assorted freaks are the sort one finds with time on their hands to be at their leisure then and surely if your bouncy were true the crowd you speak of would be comprised of such.

Nice try though.   :diebouncy:

Perhaps you do no wish to comment on my observations, thats quite OK with me.

However you should note that I would not count myself among "The disenfranchised, drifters, layabouts, hippies, bums and assorted freaks..."  and neither I assume were many of the other people there on a fine Saturday morning in the middle of summer,  mostly families and a goodly sprinkling of olde pharts such as us enjoying our retirement, a retirement made comfortable by a lifetime of careful saving and a couple of pensions including one paid as my due after a couple of decades serving my country.  But then, why would you know that eh?

Have a nice day.

First of all I believe I will add "lout" to the list.

Please, kind Sir, do enlighten us as to which country it is that you served and if not the same then which country were you born in?

Also if you may, what are your religious convictions and political associations?

Just curious.

(you also did not mention which country you were in at the time you made your supposed observations)

I am probably a bit old to be called a lout...

You want my life story?  I was born in Aotearoa (more common name is New Zealand) quite some time ago.  My family were sheep farmers in the South Island, my school vacation work was shearing sheep (which incidently I got quite good at)  I joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1964 and continued in government service for 22 years, mostly involved in matters relating to civil aviation within NZ and much of the South Pacific. I served my country as a technical specialist representative which took me to countries including, various Pacific Islands, Australia, USA, Canada, UK and as a technical specialist on a UN panel concerning the safety of international civil aviation and international search and rescue services.  I spent a few years in the field of agriculture then returned to the aviation industry designing and establishing communications systems for safety of civil aviation, my clients included governments and airlines in a few countries,  NZ, Australia, China, Korea (North), Egypt, Phillipines, Iceland, UK, Czech Republic, Canada,Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and the US including the US Coast Guard.

Sorry, thats a bit of a condensation as I missed a few bits out along the way.

I am not strong on religon but had the advantage of a Catholic education,  neither am I very strong on political associations but I do share some of the theories of both the NZ National Party and the NZ Labour Party.  I am a strong believer in my country and have a keen nose for BS which I detest.

You will note I did not include touch typing in my pocket resume.

My apologies for keeping you waiting as I had a few knitting patterns to print, and a printer that had to be disciplined.

I notice this site has a number of members with US military experience and it is interesting to hear their views on various matters and consider them in the light of my experience of working with US military and civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq and those I dealt with on the wider international scene.

Who would have thought that people in New Zealand would be so unpatriotic?  Wow.

Here in the US, at least in the Flyover Jesusland part of the US, when the US flag is displayed and the US national anthem is played, most people stand up, face the flag, and put their hands over their hearts...unless they are in uniform, then they salute.  I've seen it at games, parades, and in churches.  I've seen very elderly people struggle to their feet, proud to honor their flag and nation.  I've seen young parents teaching 2 year olds how to stand at attention, and explaining to older kids the meaning and reasons for doing so.  I've seen military veterans stand with tears in their eyes, and the families of those that didn't make it back stand with tears running down their cheeks.

I have never seen a crowd ignore the anthem, or the flag.  Of course, I spend very little time in any "blue" area, so am seldom around those that hate our country.

It's a Will Pitty sock puppet.

Also. His story on 3 Feb says he was standing around today when the song was performed. Later he says it was the middle of summer. So, either he lied or the whole thing took place in, oh... Where it it from? NZ?

try harder.

I don't have any skin in the Akubra battle, but even if everything in the OP was literally true:  Sure, courtesies are due the flag and antherm, but IT'S A FREE COUNTRY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT.  It's kind of the essence of what "Free country" means.

If I were this ass and in NZ I would shut up and go fishing.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Err.......folks, this was the OP.......the poster is from NZ......

..I was in town today and they had a stage set up for some street entertainment.  They started by singing the national anthem and I took a look around to see how people were responding, most just stood silently, a few were singing quietly,  no hands on heart on anything like and some were just ignoring the performance talking and eating hot dogs etc.  Oh well...

Why exactly does his observations regarding HIS countrymen's reaction to the playing of THEIR National Anthem create such a reaction from our US members??

In this particular case, I'm confused.......I can't by reviewing this post and thread only determine a cause for the snide responses and post reporting to the staff.  It seems innocuous enough to me........

Granted, I'm not going to take the time to review this members entire posting history, that said, please enlighten me as to what the fuss is all about...... :panic:

Yes I live in New Zealand now,  yes I was in the service of my country for a few decades 'OHMS' we call it.  Yes, now I am retired I can go fishing whenever I like. Yes, NZ is what one would call a 'free' country.

I was asked for what I had done and I gave an outline, just an outline  really.

Oh!  Today is Sunday and it really is summer.

Please explain the details of your post, location, what national anthem and what point you want to make.
