I am cleaning out my closets and want to know where to donate...

Last edited Tue Jan 3, 2012, 11:04 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

I usually would just drop stuff off at Goodwill, but I think it's probably best, as I recycle some pretty nice clothing, to try and help as BEST I can, and not just the *easiest* way I can. I am not really all the up to speed on donations (again, used to just drop it off at Goodwill, and I don't really care too much about a tax credit, I just want it to get to someone who could use it)

So, what say you, good liberal people? Disabled American Vets?

I am in the Balto-Washington corridor if that plays any role. I am donating tomorrow or the next day.

3. Any women's clothing?

Look into Dress for Success. I'm no longer in a group where I have to wear a suit every day - and has some beautiful ones . . . think a closet full of Jones New York. I gave away all but 4 - and they were thankful to have them. And don't forget any costume jewelry, brief case type bags you don't use anymore, scarves you no longer wear, dress shoes in good condition, purses.

I don't know if they have one in your area - but they might be able to point you towards a woman's shelter or a long term shelter for women trying to get back on their feet.

13. I wish there were a Dress for Success near me

Like you, I have some nice stuff that I'd be more than happy to give away--cashmere sweaters, skirts, shoes--that would be really useful for someone building a wardrobe, but there isn't a Dress for Success nearby. And I don't really want to donate something to a thrift store that would only sell for $5 or $10 or $15 if it could be used instead by someone who can't even afford that. I've called the local women's shelter and they don't take direct donations.

I've been thinking of selling things through eBay Charity Works--they automatically send whatever percentage you want, up to 100%--to an organization of your choice. So at least that way, a cashmere sweater could be turned into $40 for somebody instead of just $10 for Goodwill. (Yes, $40 is pretty steep for a sweater on eBay, but people might be willing to spend more if they knew the money was going to a good cause.) Until I get organized enough to do that, I'll just keep giving things to the homeless shelter; they give their overflow donations to St. Vincent de Paul's (which is another excellent organization), but I hope they keep the dressier items for their own clients.

But I'm writing this partly to kick the thread, because I'm looking for ideas too.

12. Good Will is good. If you have a Community Aid or Volunteers of America, that's better.

I'm not dealing with Salvation Army anymore because of their solid anti-gay stance.

Call me a snob but there is no way in hell I'd wear something Humpty HopeHoops put near his privates.

I'm not telling anyone what to do but if you shop thrift stores for clothes, you may get DUmmy cooties.

Funny how they act all uppity when donating.  They only donate THE best.    :whatever:  Yeah.

When we lived in the DFW area we donated to Christian Community Action. It is a great place to donate Dallas area CCers.

I'd suggest the DUmpmonkeys drop off old clothes, household trash, table scraps, and litterbox contents at their nearest occupooper encampment.

The primitive wasn't really interested in getting suggestions about where to donate her junk.

The primitive was more interested in boasting to the other primitives about how generous she is.

Nothing more than that.

I have to agree, the DUmmie knows where to donate, the DUmmie just wanted a "look at my awesomeness" moment.

I don't know...thrift stores have not only been helpful when trying to dress 3 kids during lean times, but as I went through a significant weight loss, it came in handy changing out the wardrobe a couple of times too. I still go and look for decent new and lightly used items. As a female, you will be amazed at how many women, even in tough economic times, donate decent stuff because they are still shopping their hineys off. I love being the beneficiary of someone with no self control in the normal stores. :-)

As for the DUmmie, what's so wrong with donating to the Goodwill? Just don't take the friggin' tax credit dipshoot. Goodwill creates jobs for a lot of REAL disabled people who could not work otherwise. A local federal agency here employs people from Goodwill for cleaning. I don't see the objection to donating to goodwill. They sell your good used crap for pennies on the dollar? So what, that money goes to employ those people I just mentioned and help them out in other ways.

That said, there are a lot of good charities out there, but I don't understand the dummies objection to goodwill. It sounds like she wants her clothes to go directly to someone who needs the clothes instead of the income generated from the clothes. Here's an idea, join a church or local community group and get to know people in need like that? I have a girlfriend who helps me through thick and thin with two of my kids. She has two girls and her (ex) husband decided in the last year he didn't get enough sexual experience for his taste when he was a young man so he's dumping his family to check out the wilds of the world---Her life changed in a heartbeat. I've given her a monster load of girl clothes for her young daughter among helping her out where I can with gas because I'm doing better now myself. She really doesn't know anybody or has no friends who might know someone who could use these? Pretty tight well to do social circle over there. Sounds like she's one of the 1% :whistling: :-)

DUmmie idea of nice, high end clothes...CHE T-shirt with no holes or stains.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

That's a collector's item right there because of the no holes and stains part.  :-)

Sounds like she wants the recognition for both donating (from her fellow DUmpsters) and the recipient.  That's the only reason I can imagine for not donating to Goodwill or Dress for Success.

I don't really care too much about a tax credit,
You're not getting a tax credit, stupidass Ladeebug.  These geniuses can never differentiate between deductions, credits, exemptions, and all the other IRS crap.  They love taxes so much, you'd think they'd be up to speed.  They screw it up all the time.

Salvation Army always gets my stuff, and I give good stuff.
