I've seen Chaz interviewed several times too, BEG, and felt sorry for her/him.
(It's hard to know what to refer to her as, since she's only had the mastectomy and takes male hormones, but last I heard/read...she isn't willing to complete the transgender surgery)
Cher was, and maybe still is by some people, considered to be a sex symbol for years. And with the exception of Sonny, who turned out to be a pretty decent guy, has been hooked up with some rather off the wall men.
Chastity was cute as a little girl, but the gene pool mix of her mother and father, didn't mix so well as she reached adulthood, and she often seemed like just another mixed up superstar's kid.
In the recent interviews with her as Chaz, she seemed to be much more content with herself and more confident in who she had become...living life as a man. I do believe, like any other physical abnomality that can happen, that sometimes the genetic makeup to determine gender, can get messed up. Maybe Chastity/Chaz is one of those individuals. I can't imagine there are many individuals out there who suddenly just decide to change their gender do it just for "shits and giggles".
Even so, I do wonder how she/he will do on DWTS. I have watched the show since it started, and it is hard to imagine what type of reception she/he will get from the viewing public rather than the audience present in the studio. If DWTS picked Chaz to boost ratings, they might have goofed big time. Personally, while I think it is a rather brave endeavor for Chaz to do, it's hard for me to take her/him seriously as a competitor, more like an early "throwaway".
---------------------
I would like to mention, totally aside from Chaz Bono, Nancy Grace or any of the other "stars"...there is going to be a man on there named JR Martinez. He is an actor on the soap opera "All My Children" ( which I freely admit that I have watched since it started over 40 years ago ), but more importantly JR is an Iraqi War vet. In 2003, at 19, he was in a humvee out on patrol when it ran over an IED. Among other injuries, he was severely burned over 40% of his body, primarily on his head/face, neck, back, chest, arms and hands. He has undergone over 30 surgeries and will continue to need more.
While in the Army hospital, not long after he was injured, a nurse overheard him giving encouragement to another burn victim. She asked that he talk with some other burn victims and that started him becoming a motivational speaker to injured war vets.
A couple of years ago, he was asked by "All My Children" to be on the show playing the part of a severely injured Iraqi War vet (obviously not a stretch) for a particular story line. It was his first acting job, as he had no plans to become an actor. Turned out, the actress in the storyline was let go, and he was kept on the show, and has become a pretty decent actor (supposedly has taken several classes in the last couple of years) with a fairly strong presence on the show.
His being on DWTS this season, will have me continuing to watch the show, as I hope he will be the winner. Even if he has 2 left feet and no coordination whatsoever, he will be a winner to me. I think he's awesome and is definitely a "Profile of Courage".
