America's serious crime rate is plunging, but why?

Source: The Guardian

Two decades ago, Washington DC had the highest murder rate in America. Now the drive-by shootings that claim the lives of innocent teenagers are infrequent enough to shock, and make the newspapers.

Criminologists and sociologists have spent years grappling to explain the dramatic slide in violent and other serious crime in the US capital, but it's not unique to Washington.

The latest FBI figures show that murder, rape, robberies and other serious crimes have fallen to a 48-year low across the country.

In Washington last year, 131 people were murdered, the lowest number in half a century. Two decades ago, there were 482 homicides in the city amid turf wars among drug gangs and crack-driven violent robberies.

3. Interesting article

My pet theory about the decline in muggings is that many (most?) people don't carry cash any more, so while a mugging might have gained you 60 bucks back in the day, now you're likely to get 5, which just isn't worth it.

Or so the NRA lobbyists and some rocking back and forth in their basements would have us believe.

1st: One of the constant complaints at the DUmp is the high percentage of blacks in our prison system. That seems to be working.

and as to DC

THE BLACK POPULATION IN DC HAS FALLEN TO 30%, THE LOWEST SINCE POST WW2 AND THE WHITE POPULATION HAS JUMPED TO 51%. CHEW ON THAT YOU MORONS YOU.

The answer is right there in front of you!

That and the fact that DC NOW has to allow guns. Add in the fact that more states have some sort of "shall issue" law, so more folks are packin'. An armed society is a polite society.......

Obama's economic policies must be working. The left keeps telling us poverty causes crime so poverty must be in decline.  :sarcasm:

The war on drugs is bearing fruit. If the DUmbasses want massive public works projects, I might agree with them if the projects were the construction of new, much bigger prisons. The more democrats confined behind bars, the lower the crime rate will go. As the Great Bush Prosperity begins to fade under the Kenyan onslaught, we'll need those additional cells.

More states, counties, and cities are allowing CCW and relaxing their draconian gun laws. Decent and civilized people can now be on equal footing with depraved looters.  The moochers are gong to take far longer to quell.

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

ALso don't forget that between two and three decades ago the crack-turf wars were underway.  Each street corner in the poor neighborhoods was seen as a lucrative asset by the organized gangs.   They fought until a detente was reached by the resources available to each gain to wage war and evade law enforcement activity balanced their ability to continue fighting.

The hispanic gangs are now in the process of driving out black gangs in some areas, and the problem is that they have deep pockets.  The cartels in Mexico would rather deal with hispanics than blacks.

That and the fact that DC NOW has to allow guns. Add in the fact that more states have some sort of "shall issue" law, so more folks are packin'. An armed society is a polite society.......

The last time I was in DC was just before the law went effect that people could own guns for protection.

I was a bit surprised at the number of people that owned well trained Pit Bulls.  Beautiful Animals, small compact and as well trained as most service dogs.    Dudgeon Square was a bit like being at a dog show, none aggressive ----no way a stranger of Adult size could pat them, but, they had no problem with the little kids that came to give them a hug.

Everyone who had one of these dogs had to have spent thousands on training, I did notice that the Muslims would not go anywhere near a dog or his Master.

Perfect for those with the money to spend on a dog for protection.    Now what about the people that can not own guns and resort to getting an untrained dog.      Disaster, family, strangers and who knows being bitten and some die.

I was relieved when the OK to own guns for personal protection was passed.

Heck I carried my Teaser to Washington and it was never picked up anywhere including the White house for years.    Mom had a pairing knife that got through security, and I am talking post 911.

Once the public is allowed to defend itself with guns, pairing knives or stun guns, the bully's who know body language and can smell A victim 2 blocks away are now challenged in how to over come these pit falls to their desires.

They will, American ingenuity will find a way to get around all this, and we the public will find a way to
out Witt them for a few years--------A battle of the minds, technology and then down home common sense.

Live geese are better then watch dogs.     Pet Pigs will protect the family as will having a very large snake in the home.

I have yet to hear of a home invasion of anyone owing a loose  6 foot constrictor.    My idea comes from when a family member bought a baby snake and just let it run wild in the home.    As it grew the family found that those that wanted to party at their place went from 50 to zero in 3 months.

Family sold the snake when a member became pregnant, they were not fools and soon could afford a security company to watch the house.    These people do not believe in Guns and were not too sure the security company could keep them safe.       What the heck could they do ??????

Big meeting of family, much discussion on zoning laws, no Geese, no dogs over 25 pounds, so one old lady--not me--came up with a dilley.

No one knew the snake had been sold, so we got together and made a snake out of Jo-ans Fabrics that looked like snake skin.  We placed it on a table at a window near the light switch so at night when the lights went out the snake was invisible.

What-What- most home invasions are by people that know what you have and they want.   Word of mouth in the hood about a huge snake running wild in a home or apartment is enough to insure more security then some company can give you.

Live geese are better then watch dogs.

Unless someone has been able to breed geese with large teeth and hellacious bite pressure, they will never replace a dog.

Ever.

If a criminal had the choice between a house with geese in the yard or a well trained German Shepherd behind the door, guess which one they're going to hit?

Geese are a much cheaper (albeit messier) first layer alarm system, but they will never replace the terror of a low growl in a dark room.

You know what, vesta?  You really should have the stupid beaten out of you with a tree branch with a quick follow up to whatever retarded family member decided to let a predatory reptile run loose in their home.

Seriously.

You have said some jaw-dropping stupid things on this forum but I think this one puts the good judgment of whatever township lets you run loose among it's civilized citizenry in serious question.  If I didn't find the thought so wildly ridiculous and implausible, I would not be surprised to find out you ate paint chips by the handful and chased it with reactor feed water discharge.

I would hear this kind of asinine prattle from my teen-aged children prior to life hitting them with the clue bat but, for some odd reason (  :whatever: ), it still surprises me when I hear it from an adult.  Especially one who has procreated.

I truly feel very sorry for anyone you come into contact with.

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.
