Christmas Came Early
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:27:26 PM »
Mrs. E allowed me to travel to Elkhorn, WI to the Edwards Instrument, Inc. factory to undergo their "ProStop" process.

I took Larry Bennett with me (the trombone player in Harmonium Brass) and spent all morning play-testing and getting outfitted with a brand-new Edwards bass trombone.

This post is certainly boring as hell for most, but what the hell -- I'm excited.  :yahoo:

Selected a medium stainless steel leadpipe, then wound up with a dual-bore handslide in yellow brass (no nickel sleeves -- the nickel tended to overly concentrate the sound making it harsh at higher volumes). This was followed up by a single-radius tuning slide, also in yellow brass, and the final bit turned out to be a .22 gauge rose brass bell, double-buffed and tempered.

The result is a bass trombone that'll suit the quintet well. Should I find myself playing Mahler in an orchestra again (not likely for awhile), I can purchase an additional bell in yellow brass and lay waste to entire swaths of viola players again.

The horn will be here on Thursday.

That looks like a pretty substantial horn.  It sounds expensive.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Boring as hell? Not at all. Brass isn't my thing but I can certainly see where you're coming from. Hanging out at Edwards must have been awesome. I would love to go down to Nashville and have the guys in Gibson's custom shop craft a Les Paul for me exactly the way I want it.
It's nice to see a company like Edwards doing well.  :II:

I checked out the photos.  If I hadn't known I never would've guessed that the photos were of a musical instrument.  It looks like some kind of vintage airplane engine component to me.  Impressive.

Went to the Gibson store that was @ Opryland Mall - prior to the floods - beautiful craftsmanship. The walls of the shop were windows so you could see them working on the guitars. The mall is being repaired, but I don't know if Gibson's will be there or not. The whole mall was destroyed in the floods.  :(

Opry Mills is scheduled to re-open next February.  Not sure if Gibson will keep their store there, but they still have their old storefront downtown.

Before my strokes in '05, I played guitar...  Acoustic guitar... badly, but I played!!

Of all the guitars I owned, my 2 Martins were the pick of the litter.

I journeyed to Nazareth, PA, to the factory to pick up my 12-string.

The museum tour was most interesting, showcasing all the famous artists that owned and played Martins. The vintage models were truly an artisan's delight.

I was  presented with my guitar at the factory, which is another delight. It was almost like stepping back in time to watch the craftsmen assemble the guitars like they did in the "good old days".

There is no guitar anywhere that sounds like a Martin, nor is built to the same standard.

If one can afford it, the cost is worth it.
Don't get stuck on stupid...

Beautiful instrument and good on the missus! I'm envious of anyone with a musical talent and the passion.
