I just paid $3600 to a rehab facility for my 92-year-old father because Medicare wouldn't cover it.

He has congestive heart failure, multiple myeloma (a blood cancer), one heart valve not working, legally blind, was transferred there from the hospital today because his heart rate fell to 30, and he is too weak to lift himself up now much less walk, and Medicare would not cover because there wasn't a valid MEDICAL REASON.

The $3,600 is upfront for 2 weeks only. Then I've got to figure out what to do, other than quit my job and move in with him, there's not really any options.

Anyone want to tell me how Medicare costs can be further cut and provide quality care???? Anyone think this Super Congress will do the right thing down the road?

Disclaimer, my father turns 92 next week.

1. To the DUmmy, I'm sad to hear about your father, it is a terrible thing to go through, losing a parent.

2. He needs Hospice, not rehab. Most likely thats WHY Medicare won't cover it.

Calling BS on this story. My fiancee is a nurse/case manager and she handles the tranfer of patients to rehab facilities from her hospital. If he was in that bad of shape and with declining vitals then the rehab would not have agreed to receive him. A patient has to be stable and or improving before a rehab will admit them. Hospice would take them if they were knocking on deaths door but no licensed rehab facility would.

92 y/o bradycardic ~30bpm?

He'd be getting the full ICU/ACLS treatment or he'd be dead in hours if not minutes.

Bring your father home and let him meet his end surrounded by the people who love him.

Yes, Rehab suggests a length of physical therapy, sometimes grueling and painful, as an investment toward a long full life past said rehab.  This is definitely a case for Hospice.  I'm sorry for what you're going through Joeybee, but you're using your father to make up stories to illlustrate how politics and medicine are a dangerous combination.

Medicare would likely help pay for several hours on in home nursing care a week in this situation as well, I know they did for my cousin's grandfather during the last year or so of his life.

Gee - isn't it amazing how quickly the 'rethugs' ruined Medicare... Although I feel sorry for your situaltion, assuming that its true, The people who brought you Obamacare will bring you more of this.

Welcome to government healthcare. Sorry to hear about your dad. I went thru all that mess myself. Medicare sucks in my opinion.

They won't pay for it because he is 92 years old, and believe it is time for him to die so any money spent for rehab would be money wasted.

This is what you would refer to as a "death panel."   Say it with me misfits, D-E-A-T-H  P-A-N-E-L.

Y'all know how Nancy Pelosi told us we will find out what's in Obamacare once we pass it?    Well you are being schooled on what's in it with your wallet and the inhumane treatment of your beloved family member.

Hope begets change, just not working out to be the change you believe in is it?

Was this before or after 0bama and the donks stole $500 billion out of medicare last year?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
