Unreal. My wife is hearing impaired, she wears two hearing aids. Without them she hears about 15%, very little.
Even with them, and she just got two new ones, $6K apiece only three days ago which she is still getting used to, she hears "well" only in quiet situations with no background noise and indoors. Basically that means at home when nothing is going on and things are quiet. Otherwise she pretty much hears no spoken words, in a restaurant, etc. Turns them off in the car, useless.
One of my fishing buddies is completely deaf, never heard a sound in his life. He signs, neither my wife or I do but somehow we communicate.
I can see how someone who has not been around hearing impaired people could, if they were extremely predisposed to being paranoid and having reason to be fearful in a bar where they expect attacks from rivals would freak at someone exhibiting what hearing impaired people do. That is, face those whom you are speaking to, which could be construed as "getting in ones face" and gesticulating with hand signals. Most folks never see this.
Again, bare in mind this would be in a public place, a bar at night, and not the usual known surroundings of the perp. I'm not condoning this, just trying to make sense of it.
