State looks at per-mile tax for electric cars


SALEM -- State lawmakers are considering charging electric-vehicle owners for every mile they drive to replace the gas taxes they won't be paying.

The issue is a conflict between the desire to encourage electric vehicle purchases and the need to maintain the roads they drive on. A House committee will take up the legislation Friday and could vote on it.

'It's a fairness issue," said Sen. Bruce Starr, R-Hillsboro, a proponent of the bill. 'They're not paying any gas tax. Everyone else is paying, why should they get a free ride?"

Opponents say it's too early to tax electric vehicle use because the state should be doing everything it can to make nonpolluting vehicles attractive to buyers.

Nothing would slow adoption of electric vehicles faster than imposing a tax on their use.

I thought you lefties loved taxes.

11. Simple, tax electric usage more and use it for roads

There you go then we will need more govt money so the poor people can keep their heat on in the winter as well as their big screen TVs.

Plus it's better for the environment.

That is true, with higher gas taxes prices for everything will be higher, there will be fewer jobs, which means less people commuting to work.

I think the state is getting plenty of sales tax from our purchases to be concerned with hybrids. What's next, a bicycle tax?

Gas taxes are generally a flat per gallon tax and are not calculated like sales tax on the price.  :banghead:

And, unless the economy is being driven into the toilet by a certain ReichsMessiah, the taxes on gasoline usually add up to more than the material cost of the damned stuff.

There should be asshole taxes on electric cars. WTF? The electricity for charging most of these cars comes from burning coal and since energy is lost at every step of the conversion process, these electric cars cause more pollution than burning gas does. That doesn't factor in the environmental costs from making and disposing of the batteries.

All of this just so some rich assholes can feel good about not burning gas.

And the more solar grows, the government will have to start taxing you for the sunlight that hits your property.  If windmills take off, they'll monitor the amount of wind you get and tax for that.  If entitlement programs keep growing, they're going to have to find a way to tax the air you breathe, too...   ::) ::)

Poor primitives -- They think that taxes should be punitive... so they work to elect tax-happy politicians who promise to tax the same people they don't like.. The only problem is those same politicians have no problem taxing anyone for any reason, so when a source of punitive taxes decreases (E.G. taxes on tobacco, -a punitive tax- since less people smoke now than ever) they need to find a new source of revenue to fill that hole.

How many times have I seen the DUmmies declare that raising taxes won't do a thing to discourage businesses and entrepreneurs?
Yet this unfailing truth of DUmmie reality suddenly falls by the wayside if it's one of their pet causes being taxed?

If they want electric cars to take over a tax will have to be put on them at some point to replace the taxes lost, this is simply obvious.

I assume that like up here your gas taxes go to things like roadwork, which if someone is paying nothing or less will cause less work being done to roads, many of which are in desperate need of work already.

Everyone should pay there share when it comes to things like that, because it's something we all take advantage of that won't pay for it's self. Electric car owners should not be off the hook.
