Story about a former member of our Scout Troop.
http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/03/08/1036757/saluting-the-flag.htmlHis dad got a job over 200 miles away last year. He and his mom stayed behind for awhile so he could finish his grade in school, wrap up his Eagle project and go to Philmont with our troop last summer. Well, I see he and his old troop are having an influence on his new troop.
Our troop has for many years been collecting old worn flags and disposing of them properly. Then once a year we have a formal public ceremony on flag day. The collection boxes, proper disposal and annual ceremony was another Eagle project from many years ago that has been continued to this day.
We have been lucky to have some very active troop leaders in the past. There are a lot of things our troop does that other troops only dream of...like a way for boys to raise money to pay for their trip to Philmont Scout Ranch every 4 years. Most of the credit goes to one Scout Master who led the troop for 32 years. He stepped down as Scout Master last year but continues as an adult leader. A couple of weeks ago he was inducted into the local Boy Scouts Hall of Fame for all his past work. Last year another one of our former troop Scout Masters was inducted. He to had been a strong leader...former Lt. Col. in the Green Berets. He had been an Eagle Scout in our troop way back. He was the one that took the scout troop to summer camp when I was a kid...53 years ago....

I still remember that trip well.
