The Chechen Islamist rebel leader who is Russia's most wanted man has issued an appeal for recruits for a "total war" against the Russian state, in a new video message posted on Thursday.
 
"A total war is in progress, fight the enemy where ever you can," Doku Umarov said standing alongside two other militants in a snow-covered forest in a video posted on militant website hunafa.com.

While that may be true, I would think that Vlad (The Impaler?) would get the Russian Air Force to do saturation bombing of wherever this idiot was suspected of being, until they finally got him.

Bombing is quick but the results are very iffy, look at what happened when Clinton wasted 70 Tomahawks to kill a dozen night watchmen and goatherders in Afghanistan.  If the Russkiis had a clue where this asswipe was, you could pretty well count on a couple of Spetznatz teams and VDV brigade being on the way to it today.  But, with insurgents/terrrorists/guerrillas/whatever, the one thing you can count on is that he ISN'T sitting wherever that was taped waiting for them to show up.

They're mainly in an area where either the Muzzies are a large minority or there is a significant ethnic Russian minority, so nukes aren't really an option for Vlad and Viktor on this.

I don't give much thought to this whole Chechnya thing, it just doesn't come up very much in the western media, but it should. At a time when there is a lot of diplomacy going on between the U.S. and Russia I get the impression that the U.S. doesn't want to bring it up. It's a Russian problem, deep in Russia, let them handle it and we'll just look the other way, etc. Wouldn't want to hinder Barry's efforts to hand our ass to the Russians with this whole nuke deal, don'tchaknow...

The massive size of the Russian army being what it is, one would think they could have reduced Chechnya to a greasy stain on the map by now but it has dragged on for more than a decade with no end in sight. Russia is not fighting a traditional uniformed standing army out in the open with clear lines drawn. They are up to their eyeballs in a swamp and in classic guerrilla style, the enemy blending with the civilian population and making it very difficult to prosecute a war against them. Russian atrocities don't help matters and are the norm rather than the exception. They face the same foe we face, Islam. Short of all out genocide, which has been the Russian path in Chechnya, the only remedy is wholesale deportation. If they want the "Chechnya problem" eradicated the only viable solution is to round up every man woman and child and deport them, but to where? The only logical direction is south, into Iran and then seal the border. Doing so would royally piss off Tehran who Russia is pals with and don't want to upset. Quite the sticky wicket for Moscow with no clear answers.

It seems today's Russian army has little changed from the Red Army of WWII when a take no prisoners mentality held sway. Watch each of these individual captured Chechyan rebels taken into the back of a truck -alive- and subsequently each is hauled out, quite dead a moment later. They likely met with a pistol to the back of the head inside the truck, unseen to the outside. Obviously taped by the Russians themselves this video was likely captured.

I was kinda thinkin' of goin' to the source, if ya know whatah mean! Wipe out a few hundred thou in Iran, or Somalia and those who think they're untouchable might rethink their jihad!

Al, there would almost certainly be some huge 'Unintended consequences' issues once that plan got set in motion, which is why even the Russkiis aren't going there.

FreeBorn, all true, I've read some stuff former Russian troops have written on it as well as some more-or-less  objective stuff on the military ops.  One thing that strikes me about the Russian operations is that they put a pretty low value on even their own soldiers' lives (And about zero on lives of captured insurgents, just slightly more on civilians) and I don't mean just your average Motorized Rifle Regiment soldat.  They are just as profligate with the men in their special operations forces.  Their planning, security, and force protection standards are all far below the norms in Western military forces, even in their elite units.  Their big virtue is toughness, and they are all of that, but they're very wasteful with their own troopers' lives.

I know, but if they get pressed too far, I doubt they would have much in the way of a conscience in doing so. I try to think about if somethin' like 9/11 in Moscow went down. I doubt all they would do is invade Afghanistan. They tried that once and it didn't turn out well.
