In the latest episode in the xenophobia that is sweeping through the Republican party, the New Mexico governors wants to ban illegal immigrants from having drivers license as reported by Reuters.

I disagree with the governor's position because allowing driver's license for illegal immigrants actually promotes safe driving. By allowing the immigrants the right to have drivers license, the undocumented workers will be more inclined to follow traffic laws amd less accidents results. It force the undocumented workers to be more accountable for their driving because they would not want to lose the privilage and go to the risks of not having a license. With a license, the undocumented workers would also to be more likely to purchase insurance

While ICE has the right to deport back to their country of origin, public safety triumphs any potential determent towards not coming to the United States. The potential benefit of reduced accidents and higher compliance with traffic safety laws exceeds the potential determent that would prevent a citizen from staying in the country of origin and not migrating to the United States or returning to the country of origin because they lack the ability to drive and therefore, the inability to find work.

It is ICE's jobs to track down undocumented workers and deport them. It is not the state's right. It is the state responsibility for public safety of its highway system. Therefore, under the principles of federalism, it is better public policy to continue to have the drivers license for undocumented workers and let ICE worry about the deportation of undocumented workers.

Instead of allowing illegal aliens to obtain a DL (under the guise of public safety), how about immediate arrest and jail time (followed by a proper deportation hearing), for any illegal caught driving without a license and/or insurance?

Last time I checked there weren't too many lettuce fields at home.  Chile fields, yes.  Lettuce, not so much.

Oh, and if you took everyone in CA who didn't have a valid license, registration, or insurance, you'd drop about 30-40 percent of the traffic off the roads.  That's a no-shitter.  And while CA might pretend to not give licenses to illegals, see what happens in places like Huntington Park, etc., if you asked the average driver there for one.  Fake or none.  So don't give me any bullshit about illegals suddenly getting a pang of conscience and getting a driver's license to be "legal".

Maybe they should do what FL does. Even if you have had a DL for your entire life you now need a copy of your birth certificate, ss card, and 2 forms proving you live where you say you do.

Why should we have to jump through all these hoops to get a DL and someone who comes here illegally can just be handed a license?

The state of NM is right on this and the DUmmies are being stupid like always.

All my drivers handbooks that I've ever read claimed driving was a privilege not a right.
When did they make it a right for non-citizens?

That's what I was always told also. Back in driver's Ed in high school they made sure to mention everyday that it was a privilege.

Susana Martinez is the new republican governor of New Mexico.  I guess the DUmmies didn't notice her last name.  I think I've even seen pictures of her and she appears to be Hispanic.  Yet, here she is insisting that her citizens welfare leech illegal immigrants respect the law???

I've been hit by an illegal immigrant.  Spoke NO English.  The officer had to radio in a bi-lingual officer.  Had NO DL.  Obviously NO insurance.  And the damn cops in Phoenix let him go.  I had to pay for the damages myself.  Uninsured and illegal immigrant drivers cause our insurance rates to skyrocket.

New Mexico, good for you.  Too bad the rest of the country won't follow.

A ) obtain a drivers license that will list in a government computer system your name, address, etc. - as well as your illegal resident status ?

B ) steal someone else's identity, and use that instead.

I was taught that years ago. Then again it seams everything these days it a right...at least in a lot of peoples minds.

There was a 17 year old guy here recently who lost his license for drunk driving and thought they were denying him a right or something.  :hammer:
