(NewsCore) - A US Navy intelligence specialist was charged Thursday with attempted espionage in Virginia.

Charges were also leveled against Navy Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class officer Bryan Minkyu Martin, 22, for attempting to sell classified information to an unauthorized man, according to a navy public affairs spokeswoman.

Martin was arrested last December while assigned to the Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where naval personnel are trained in combat and specialized missions.

An undercover FBI agent posing as a foreign intelligence officer met with Martin in a hotel lobby. During the meeting, Martin said he was looking for "long-term financial reimbursement" in exchange for bundles of classified folders, according to a federal search warrant quoted at the time by the Fayetteville Observer.

He allegedly gave the agent dozens of secret and top secret documents and accepted a total of $3,500 over a few meetings.

Martin is being held in Naval Brig Norfolk, Va. A court-martial date has not been determined.

It's past time that the people who leak formally classified information and those that receive it are dealt with in a public and extremely harsh manner, regardless of who they are and what part of the government or military they're in.

Cut his head off and fly it from the mast of his ship until the seagulls pick it clean.  I think that will make a sufficient example.

Time to bring back keelhauling.

keel hauling, isn't that when they tie the hands of the person and the other end to the yardarm, toss person over the rear end of the boat and he trails behind it? he either drowns or becomes shark bait??
The sea is treacherous, but an even hand on the keel brings it safely to port.

IIRC, the hands are tied over the head, and the feet are tied.  A rope is run down the length of the ship's hull, and the punished is thrown off the bow, and dragged the length of the keel, to the stern.  Very few, if any, survived this.

Under that aircraft carrier ought to do.

WTF is goin' on? We are all volunteer now. Why does this shit keep happenin'? Ya know what, if you don't hold our country's secrets in the highest regard, just why in the hell did you enlist and then get a security clearance?

We need to start executing traitors post haste! Perhaps that would encourage these punks to be a little more "patriotic"!

I handled COMSEC gear while I was USN. NEVER ONCE did the thought occur to me to sell away our secrets, no matter HOW broke I was. That was one thing that was sacrosanct to me.

I'll go you one better--not as a dick-measuring contest, just the way business is done.  Anyone who has ever been on a fast boat, and some who haven't, will back me on this.

On submarines, we go out on an "op", and as we transit out (within the first couple of days) and do a brief with every member of the crew: this is where we're not going, this is what we're not doing, this is what we're not seeing, and sign this piece of paper.  45-90 days later, as we're pulling off station and transiting to a port, we get a debrief: this is where we didn't go, this is what we didn't do, this is what we didn't see, sign ANOTHER piece of paper or two, and oh, if you even discuss ANY of this with even members of the crew WHO WERE THERE WITH YOU, then you can look forward to many years in a federal "pound-me-in-the-ass" prison, even when you're a civilian many years from now.

Which is why I was kind of surprised when "Blind Man's Bluff" came out about 10 years ago.

I was never told where we were or where we weren't.  However , when standing certain watches I would plot dots and see the maps of where we were.

and the infamous case of Sandy the burglar. remember ???? he stole docs from the national archive. walked out under surveillance with docs stuffed down his pants and up his shirt. when they caught up with him he suddenly a case of memory lapse. his punishment??? lost his clearance for I think 5 years. and maybe a fine.

national security is joke
