Quote
The 68th annual Golden Globes veered into Cluedo territory last night as the event's host went missing for nearly an hour. Ricky Gervais's absence from the stage, following an opening monologue that drew more gasps than laughs, led excited observers to speculate that the British comic may have been collared backstage and fired … or worse.

Gervais opened the live telecast by poking exuberant fun at the likes of Tim Allen, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. He claimed to have had to help Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, off the toilet and "put his teeth back in". He introduced Bruce Willis as "Ashton Kutcher's dad" and explained that Johnny Depp's critically panned caper movie The Tourist had only been nominated because the voters of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association "accepted bribes". Neither Willis nor Depp appeared especially amused.

If it wasn't a show with guys chasing a football then I didn't see it last night. All those award shows are for the actors not the people that actually fill the seats in the theaters.

He was pretty good. It was fun to see the crowd get their panties in a wad. The Scientology dig got the most boos.  :-)

He dared to shine a light on the reality of Hollywood. Not the glitz and glamor they would prefer us to believe. Or the idea of the "impartiality" of these award shows.

  • Oh snap!
I wish Ricky Gervais was a member of CC.  A H5 is waiting for him if he ever cares to register.

They laughed until he said about them...I wasn't going to watch it but after a minutes I decided I would thanks to him.

I loved it, he gave them what what deserved.

Yes, it was pretty cool to see all the lefties get their thongs all twisted up. I didn't watch it, never do, but he had some real zingers I heard.

I'm not a big fan of his, but I enjoyed the YouTube clips of his performance the other night.  (I especially enjoyed his little shot at Cher!) Anyone who can get the Hollywood stuffed shirts all lathered up is all right with me.  Of course, he'll probably never be invited back to host.  Poor Ricky... should've stuck to "safe" jokes about Sarah Palin.

Don't mistake that as some conservative leaning tendencies, he's just as quick to attack conservatives in his stand up routines.

I think Tim Allen or Tom Hanks said it best, when they said they preferred the chubbier and kinder Ricky from before.  Some of his jokes and jabs are pretty hilarious, but there's a lot of just plain mean-spiritedness in his comedy now.

I saw the network promo for the show and in it he claimed that he was going to do his best to not get invited back.
