Stores Open on Holidays

I don't like it that stores are open on holidays. Heck, I remember a time when stores were all closed on Sundays and EVERY Holiday. Nowadays, it seems that the bottom line is more important to these stores than the employees and their family time. I recall one New Year's Day , I drove around looking for whipping cream from one of the convenience stores because my mom had forgotten to buy that beforehand. Now, it's no problem as most every store is open. I think that on MAJOR holidays, all stores should be closed.

I agree completely.  I didn't mind having stores closed on Sunday either.  Some of the Blue laws were really crazy though, I remember when they had aisles of the grocery store cordoned off, and that was kind of silly.

Yeah, I remember that. Some stores would put plastic sheets over the areas that they couldn't sell on Sundays. I never agreed with the Blue laws. Hell, make a decision, open or closed.

Exactly.  It was really wierd.....like you could buy tp and not paper towels.  And you couldn't buy panty hose.  I liked working retail back then, because we always had Sunday off.  If I ever had to work retail again, I would apply at Hobby Lobby or Elliots.

Sam's Club is closed, but Walmart is open today.

Walmart was a MESS!  We were behind a woman who had three carts of junk food.  It drove me crazy.  The place was a madhouse.  We tried to lane jump, but it was too late.  We were stuck behind that woman.

I don't think Starbucks closes for ANYTHING! Most stores will at least open later on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but Starbucks never closes it seems.

I just got back from BJ's, I needed some cases of bottled water and needed hubby to come, I had totally forgotten it was a Holiday when I told hubby he needs to go, so I called them and they're opened until 7, I was surprised. It wasn't packed but they had a nice little crowd.

We made a trip to K Mart earlier and they were fairly busy. I think the family centric Holidays should at least see most stores closed, Christmas, Thanksgiving being the most important ones.

We don't have many of them around here, but I've always like the fact that Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sundays.

Oh, and the poker room in Seabrook was closed New Year's Eve, but open New Year's Day.  WTF?

Around here, for years, only Stewart's Shops were open on Christmas.  Now, there's a couple of gas stations that double as convenience stores that are open on Christmas.

I don't consider New Year's Day a major holiday.  Besides, all I wanted was some window-shopping at the Aquatic Critter for my stepfather. :wink:  It bothers me that stores are open on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, though.  It's just wrong.  I have worked plenty of Christmases and Thanksgivings at places that refused to close for the holiday. 

This entire week the city has looked like a ghost town.  Since Christmas last weekend, there is hardly any traffic on the roads and everything looks deserted.  I suppose that will all change Monday morning.

I make it a practice not to shop on Christian holy days and national holidays.  People deserve a few days home with their families.  Sundays are a bit different.  Some people may only have Sundays to shop or conduct other business.

Back in the late 70's Texas decided to crack down on their blue laws. So on Sundays you could drop by the grocery store and buy guns and ammo but not a box of non-essential crackers or cookies.

Not that long ago I was a bachelor who worked 9-11 hour days starting at 7:30 am.

(Now I'm married and work 8.5 hour days starting at 3:00 pm.)

Most businesses and all government offices were closed anytime I wasn't working.  Driver's license renewal day was an unpaid day off (the nature of the job being if you couldn't get there by 9:00 the work was reassigned).

I had occasion almost daily to thank God for 24/7 operations.

I'm glad most local (Grand Rapids, MI) stores with extended/holiday hours call for volunteers-- and pay them extra-- to work the special days.

Of all the things to get cranked about, businesses that are open Christmas Day aren't on my list.
