G.I. bill, lack of job opportunities, and love of country spur record recruiting for armed forces

City kids are lining up to join the military in record numbers for love of country, lack of jobs - and a chance for college money under the new G.I. bill.

The rush to enlist in the five boroughs is so great that there are even waiting lists for those wanting to become a Marine Corps grunt on a fast track to Afghanistan. snip

"Some of us don't have money," Abby Teves, 19, a graduate of Newtown High School in Queens, said at the Army recruiting station in Elmhurst.

Glenn was followed through the door by Isaac Perez, a student at Intermediate School 71 in Brooklyn. Since Perez was only 17, he brought along his mother, Yesenia Sierra, to sign paperwork for him. snip

"The Marines will give him a future," she said. "I'm supporting his decision."

The NY Daily News gives another, "only the poor and minorities join the military" bullshit meme, and the DUmmies swallow it hook, line, and sinker:

Yes.... I'm patriotic because I lack a job and opportunity and
need to become cannon fodder for the empire.

And ME going to Afghanistan will cost the taxpayer ONE MILLION DOLLARS
a soldier........

WHAT A ****ING WASTE OF MONEY.... But hey... I'm educated on weapons now and programed to kill on command..... What a Jarhead.

GFY, scrunt.

4. Is this the best we can do?

I have a son who is 20 and can't find any kind of part time work at all.Luckily I have been able to keep him in school, even though it takes all my resources.

A jobless young man or woman will gladly take the risk in order to be able to make a living when their is no opportunity. It looks like they learned their lesson from Viet Nam and having got rid of the draft, decided to use poverty as a recruitment tool. These troops aren't likely to disobey orders or refuse to fight.

Ever seen a recruiter working a rich private school? Just class warfare on the poor.

When I was a recruiter, I was invited to speak at a number of private schools.  My experience has run the gamut from shitholes (Compton, Centennial, Bell HS) to the most affluent public AND private schools in Southern California, such as Santa Barbara, Palos Verdes, and Mira Costa High Schools. (Manhattan Beach)  Was I well received everywhere?  Actually, no--but the best receptions were in fact in middle- to upper-middle class areas.  Huh--go figure.

19. What about giving them jobs building stuff here instead of destroying stuff over there?

Or is that too radical of an option?

17 and still in middle school? This kid has more issues than a waiting list.

School only goes up to 10th grade.  I'm throwing the bullshit flag.  Kid can't even DEP in until he's a senior and then the school has to issue a will-grad letter saying he's on track.

I can tell you that they're very reluctant to DEP in kids during the first semester of their senior year because it really narrows the shipping window, and if something happens, they're an attrite.

They said if I voted for Palin that the economy would be so bad that only minority kids would join the services.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I don't have the honor of being able to call myself a Marine. I do, however, have the privilege of being a citizen of the great nation that the Marines serve. As a fan and supporter of the Marines and our other armed forces I feel the need to respond to this DUmmie.

NNN0LHI,

There is an old saying that says it is better to keep your mouth shout and let everyone THINK that you're a fool than it is to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Maybe you should give that old saying some thought the next time you post because, to me, your post displays how much you do not know.

You see, our Marines and other armed forces are not "over there" to "destroy stuff". They are indeed "over there" building stuff. They are working toward building a free society. The ones "over there" that are causing the destruction of stuff are the murderers of innocents that you and your ilk cheer while ignorantly calling them "freedom fighters".

If our Marines were over there with the sole goal of destroying stuff you would know it because they would be done and home in less than 48 hours, but building a free society takes a little longer than destruction ESPECIALLY when having to face hurdles placed by you and your ilk, members of your Democrat Party, and the murderers you ignorantly cheer as "freedom fighters".

Also, when you go to sleep at night remember you are able to type all your anti-military and anti-American bullshit on you're little terrorist/dictator worshiping message board because of our Marines and other armed forces.
“Don’t vote for the person who tells you you deserve something. Just don’t do it if it’s something other than life, liberty, or the pursuit of possible happiness. If everyone is telling you you deserve something, vote for the one who is promising you the least. Be suspicious of the man or woman who tell you deserve everything. Because you don’t.” ---Mike Rowe

Dummies should all die from their own ignorance. Last time I checked the Military let you CHOOSE to join and Choose your MOS to get into. We are not in such bad shape that every child that joins needs to be in the Combat arms of any branch . Stupid like that tells you why the Dodo died and became extinct

My son first went and talked with a Navy recruiter in late 2002. I was with him.

There was a waiting list then for many of the Navy MOS's....and according to the recruiter, there was one for many of the Marine ones. A friend's son had gone into the Marines in early 2001, and there was wait then, too. He was a "grunt".

My son was in DEP for 8 months before he went to boot camp.

I've had other friends whose children have gone in since, including one of M's step-granddaughters. All went into DEP programs.

Not one of these kids have come from "poor" families. Every single one of them had parents that could pay for college educations. If anything....all these kids could easily be considered "priviledged". Several, including my son, were HS honor students. Oh....and they are white kids....but I guess in some areas, they would be minorities.   ::)

So Dummies....take your BS and stuff it up your collective asses.

Hey ichingcarpenter, I got one word for you = DUchebag!
I don't think you're "patriotic" at all. I think you're a lowly anti-American that does not know the enemy if the enemy was staring into your face.
