Only six more days until nominations begin for the TOP DUmmies OF 2010, on the eve of Thanksgiving.
Leading up to that, and reminding members to recall their favorite primitives of 2010, there's a question today: should my fellow alum Skins allow the primitives to mention, talk about, link to, the DUmpster on Skins's island?
Of course he doesn't, and won't, and how decent and civilized people feel about the matter wouldn't affect things anyway. Skins's island is private real-estate, and my fellow alum is free to make whatever rules for it that he wishes to make. It's the American way.
When the DUmpster first came into being in December 2007, we had hoped it would be exempt from Skins's "no mention" rule, because the DUmpster after all was not in our old home, conservativeunderground, any mention of which had been sternly and rigorously repressed on Skins's island. My fellow alum had expressedly said conservativeunderground was off limits to the primitives, but he never said anything about conservativecave.
Under that technicality, the primitives successfully managed to point us out for the first few months of our existence, until the lowly moderators on Skins's island began saying it wasn't a good idea. If there is any ban on the mention of conservativecave or the DUmpster on Skins's island, it is something imposed by lower-level management, not by uppermost management.
To this date, unlike what had been done several years ago re: conservativeunderground and the Best/Worst of DU forum there, my fellow alum Skins has never stepped up to the podium and sonorously announced, "mention of conservativecave and the DUmpster is expressedly forbidden here."
Perhaps Skins is putting the onus on the lowly moderators instead of himself, because there is, after all, that old school tie between himself and franksolich. My fellow alum wants no mention of us on his site, but doesn't want to injure a fellow alum's feelings, so he has his underlings do it.
One might, especially if a newer member here, ask why this is a rule (involving both conservativeunderground, our old home, and this place) on Skins's island.
The ostensible reason--which might, or might not, very well be the real reason--is because Skins doesn't want to give "free publicity" to the competition.
Yeah, right, "competition."
I dunno how our old home, conservativeunderground stacks up, but it appears this place is but one-ninth the size of Skins's island; pretty puny in comparison, much as Skins's island is a mere figment when compared with the oldest and greatest and biggest of all, freerepublic.
This is a case of not just David versus Goliath, but of a lilliputian David against Goliath.
A toy "Matchbox" car against an International Harvester semi-truck.
An "N"-gauge electric train against a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" steam locomotive.
A Barbie doll when compared with the massive subway cat or the gigantic primitive.
One must inevitably conclude that it isn't the size of conservativecave and the DUmpster that intimidates Skins, but rather something else--the power of ideas, principles, morality, intellect, of decent and civilized people, which can overtake and conquer the Powers of Darkness and Hate, no matter how large.
