I came millimeters away from losing an eye to a BB. I saw it coming, and managed to turn my head enough that it caught the skin on the outside corner of my eye, then it bounced off my ear. I still have a faint scar where that BB grabbed me. I was also about 12 at the time.

I will never forget seeing that BB coming at me. my eye focused on it and I watched it get bigger and bigger very very quickly.

Stuff happens.  I was trying to see my way through a dark room and *pop!*.  There went my eye.  I might as well be blind... I can see color and shapes, but that's about it.

My step brother once decided he'd shoot a tire with a .22! It came right back and hit him in the thigh! Took forever for me to convince him to let me take a look as he had both hands coverin' it afraid to look! He lucked out, it just left a bruise the size of a softball!

My Uncle said he heard the plink when it hit the train, and looked to see what made that sound, and well, that is all she wrote.

At least he wasn't shooting a .50 cal like this guy...talk about CLOSE CALL:

Wow. It's never crossed my mind to try that, but I figured a .22 has enough WHAP! to tear through the rubber. I thought because of the angle of the metal, it might ricochet in a different direction too. Glad I read your comment, cause obviously...I'm wrong. (It does sound like something my cousin would do though.) He once decided it'd be a good idea to hold a homeade silencer on his rifle when he couldn't screw it on.

It wasn't...

And what was that guy shooting at, Sparky? Couldn't quite see. Sounded like the round tinked a can or something.

From what I understand, if the tire is inflated, the .22 will go thru it without adverse effects.

However if there is any give, as in an un-inflated tire, the rubber has enough pliability to bounce the bullet! Ya really gotta be one lucky sumbitch to shoot at an the angle so it comes right back at ya!

BTW, I laughed my ass off!!!!!!!!!!! He had "borrowed" the gun outa Dad's cabinet in the first place! He would have had to cop to doin' somethin' Dad woulda kicked his ass for after he healed!

I bet there are organizations that work in Africa and other third world countries that would love some glass eyes.  I know our church collects glasses and our old church collected medicine bottles.  They need everything it seems like.

I will look into that.  His eye was shot out, not in, in the 40's, and they aren't like the ones they use these days, according to my other Uncle, the Opthomologist.  He said they were just good for keepsakes.

I once watched them make one on a tv show.  It was so cool how they took a mold of the eye socket and then popped it out!  I don't think jewelry would be out of line for them then.

Well, I have a shoebox filled with em.  They resized as he got bigger, and I guess, as technology improved.  I doubt the smaller, original ones are of any value to anyone, but maybe the newer ones.  He died in 87, so maybe not.  But, before I make jewelry of em, or throw em in someone's drink, I will scope out any philanthropic oppty.  Of course, I really kind of dig the idea of putting them in ice cubes.  Just the kind of gal I am.   :hyper:
