Plumbing & Sewer commode mystery
« on: September 13, 2010, 01:19:22 AM »
I went into my bathroom Thursday morning and the bath mat close to the commode was soaking wet and almost all of the water was out of the toilet. The floor was a little damp but it felt like someone took a small bucket of water and dumped it on the bath mat. I did not take a shower the night before. The mat did not smell. There was no leak around the commode so the seal is OK and there is no leak coming from underneath the floor.

I called a plumber friend of mine and he said the city sewer line could have had a plug and to call a sewer service. The service guy came out and he could not find anything wrong. The commode, the tub and all the sinks were working like they should.

I wonder if anyone has ever heard of water exploding out of a commode. The plumber and sewer guy never heard of this. Any thoughts.

Are you sure you didn't get up in the middle of the night and uh......"miss"? :-) Alot of times toilets will leak from the base only when you flush them too! The wax ring may be going bad.

Nope, I never get up in the middle of the night. The wettest part was on TOP of the bathmat rather than underneath it. Almost all of the water had disappeared out of the toilet. The toilet is under 2 years old and is not leaking around the base so it is not the wax ring. The only explanation I can come up with is that some kind of pressure blew the water out of the commode on top of the bathmat. The bathmat did not smell either.

I haven't had that happen but twice since we moved into this house our down stairs bathroom shower (in the kitchen bath) has had water come up from the drain and it has a sandy type dirt in it. It happened for the 2nd time this weekend.

Edited to add that we never use that shower.

My guess would be the sewer line had a temp blockage causing a back up. :tinfoil:
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

The floor around and behind the commode/ tank is dry as a bone now. Four days later and not a drop of water in the bathroom.

The only plausible explanation is the one by Zeus in that some kind of surge took place and that the clean water in the commode exploded onto the bath mat. Like I said, most of the wetness was on top of the bath mat rather than on the floor or under the bath mat.  My plumber and sewer guy stated they had never heard of this.

I have seen air pockets in the sewer drain affect water levels in the bowl before, but never a hiccup.  Too bad you were asleep and missed it.  I bet that looked pretty freaky.

You and Wineslob are no help at all. :-)

Just hoping that there is no repeat performance. The sewer guy did not charge me for coming out. He said next time it will be $95.

Actually I shoulden't joke. My Great Aunt died of a heart attack on the bathroom floor (1986/ she was in her late 80's and very overweight), We figure she used one of those pressure cans to clear a blocked line in the kitchen sink (we found it on the counter), but it ended up "barfing" all the......errrr.....stuff  back out the toilet in her bathroom. The bathroom walls were covered with black stuff that had exploded out of the toilet. When she opened the door we figure the shock of seeing what had happened caused a massive heart attack.
She was found on the floor of the bathroom, curled up in a ball.
