Ground Zero tolerance
Future New York mosque a fitting symbol of American values.

Last week, we were all given a welcome lesson in how best to react to terrorism — and to bigotry. In a unanimous vote, New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission allowed plans to proceed to build a Muslim community center and mosque near the site of the World Trade Center.

To be sure, family members of some of the victims of the 9/11 attacks opposed the project, as did the Anti-Defamation League and some less principled anti-Islam protesters. But support for the center was strong and diverse.

The $100 million project, says its website, "is about promoting integration, tolerance of difference and community cohesion through arts and sciences." Named Cordoba House, after the Spanish city where Jews, Christians and Muslims lived in remarkable harmony for hundreds of years before the Spanish Inquisition, the 13-story center will house an auditorium, art spaces, a swimming pool, restaurants and bookstores, and will be open to all.
