Optional work program for the homeless and unemployed

This idea came to me, there could be a work program for the homeless and unemployed. They would be optional. We have dozens of abandoned military bases all over the country, as well as abandoned buildings in cities everywhere. You would get a private home - place to sleep, food to eat, and bathrooms with showers while in the work program and doing your job. There would also be free health care available, as well as programs for those with drug or alcohol problems. This would all be FREE OF CHARGE. And you would get a FAIR LIVING WAGE for your work. The work would be mostly infrastructure work, ie repairing bridges, building new roads, light rail, etc. Those with specialized skills (ie computers, communications) would be put to work in an appropriate field. Training programs would be available for those wishing to learn new trades or skills.

This might be good for homeless who are looking to get out of being homeless and teach them new job skills and life skills too.

Seems a lot more humane and less exploitational than sending people to work camps.

Maybe I am nuanced enough to understand what the difference between this proposal and the other is.
The major problem for DUmmies will still exist, people will be expected to work.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

If they're making a "living wage" then why can't they pay for their room and board like everyone else?

We have a big time bucks shelter for the homeless in my area.

The draw for donations is the in house counseling, job traing and round the clock help for those with drug dependency.

Come to find out, because of budget cuts, for 20 years none of that was available.

When people questioned the number of sex offenders living next door to a family with children the Shelter told the press that it was against policy to check with the police about any police problems with the homeless.

They the shelters need to keep their beds full to get grants and funds from government and city.    Non Profit or not, money has to be paid for staff, upkeep and any kind of professional help they need for the residents.

When money runs low due to the warm seasons and people wanting to live in tents with no rules or regulations, then there is most often empty beds.

This is when the money they need to spend for mental health or job training takes a hit.

In order to pay the salary's for Lawyers, office staff etc. the actual help to the people has to be suspended.

Funny, I remember when a big name winter clothing company sent 5,000 pair of winter boots to this shelter. These boots had a sale price of $75.00 a pair.

Within 24 hours all the boots were on the street, I admit I bought 2 pair for $30.00 from a pan handler.  I had no idea where they came from, they were just the very best boots I have bought.  A week later when I read about this scam in the local news,  All I could do was to think about American ingenuity to make the best of any situation.

6. Um, these would BE work camps.

If you are collecting people on military bases, how is that not going to become a work camp?

I like the idea. If people are given work, training, healthcare and a place to live then it's what we need right now. But it's just a variation on the theme, not really something entirely different.

People with disabilities would almost certainly be excluded though. I don't know of any military base that would be capable of handling the special housing and accessibility needs that would come up with people with various disabilities. That's one possible limitation I see.

I'd hate to see us excluded. But otherwise, I like the idea of utilizing all the closed or underused military bases.

7. I'm pretty sure that those with disabilities could be accomodated

Setting up housing capable of handling those with special needs could be arranged, and we could find jobs for them as well
. Not all of the jobs would entail the heavy physical labor that people typically think of when they think of infrastructure-related jobs. There would need to be a support system in place, which opens up a whole slew of opportunities.

And as far as it being a camp, I suppose you could call it whatever you wanted to. I would prefer to think of it as a work community, one that would be run by the workers themselves.

Reason why ThomCat couldn't do ANY work in 3, 2, 1 ....
