Boat builders: John Kerry could have created jobs in U.S.

New England boat builders say shame on Sen. John Kerry for buying a $7 million New Zealand-built luxury yacht while local ship makers struggle to find work.

“Darn, that would have been a wonderful job for a Maine builder,” said Jane Wellehan, president of the trade group Maine Built Boats. “If someone comes to build a $7 million boat that would employ half the population of some towns for a year or two. Boat building is such a critical component of our coastal economy.”

The question they couldn’t answer was how come John Kerry’s $7 million went to luxury yacht builders in New Zealand, rather than luxury yacht builders here in New England?

The response via e-mail: “Whether it’s re-developing the South Weymouth Naval Air Station on the South Shore, the re-created Assembly Square Mall site in Somerville, or the General Dynamics plant in Pittsfield, Senator Kerry is using his smarts, clout and good old-fashioned hard work to make the Massachusetts economy grow and prosper.”

You’ll have to do better than that, senator. Your $7 million yacht contract could have put lots of local craftsmen to work varnishing the teak, installing that palatial bed and creating all those “glossy Edwardian accents.”

Forget “Isabel” - Liveshot Kerry should rename his $7 million sloop “The Botched Joke.”

You remember that was how he tried to explain away his nasty little dig at the military, back in 2006, saying that if kids don’t study hard, they’ll end up in Iraq. He said it was a botched joke. So I wonder how Liveshot is trying to explain this latest botched joke to his ancient gold-digging bride in her $9.2 million mansion on Brant Point in Nantucket.

This isn’t the first time Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has made headlines for elitist exploits.

Out of touch: Photos of Kerry windsurfing in Nantucket during the 2004 presidential campaign may have hurt his election chances. Then-candidate George W. Bush used the shots in a campaign ad saying the senator’s positions shifted “whichever way the wind blows.”

All wet: In 1997, Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz, paid to relocate a fire hydrant around the corner so they could park more cars in front of their swanky Louisburg Square home on Beacon Hill. The removal improved the “pictorial environment” of the street, a spokesman said at the time

“My wife is the majority stockholder of this, eh, holds it and she’s a Pennsylvania taxpayer so let’s not get silly here. We pay enormous taxes to the state of Massachusetts and there is nothing illegal here. . . .
