Democrats to Propose Extending Bush's Middle-Class Tax Cuts

<snip>

"Senate Democrats will soon advance a plan to make permanent President George W. Bush's 2001 tax cuts for middle-class Americans earning less than $200,000, but let the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans expire, two Senate party aides said Tuesday. They will also propose to reinstate a 45% estate tax on individuals for the next two years.

The emerging tax plan is designed, as much as anything else, to clarify the differences between the two parties as they hurtle toward the fall elections. Following on their success with the financial-regulatory-reform bill, Democrats are betting that Republicans will once again take up a legislative battle on behalf of the wealthy. "Republicans are going to have a real choice ahead of them," says a Democratic aide. "Are you for extending these tax cuts for middle-class families or are you against them because you want to protect tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americans?"

The showdown could come as early as August, now that Senate majority leader Harry Reid has decided to keep his colleagues in Washington through the middle of next month."

Now wait just a minute. For years I have heard that Bush only cut taxes for rich people so how is it the dems want to preserve the tax cuts for the not rich?

1. Good. Bring it up before the elections and let the Republicans squirm   Updated at 1:38 PM

Big money, big corporations. That's all they care about.

No republicans just realize that big money and big corporations make the economy run. I bet the small percentage of primitives with a job work for a corporation.

4. Instead of tax cutting to achieve fairness, how about tax raising?

Why not raise it on the top, instead of cutting it from the middle?

Cutting taxes isn't extremely stimulative. The extra revenue one would gain from a hike could be used in very efficient stimulatory ways directly by the government

And hell, its not like the government couldn't use extra revenue (rather than less). Is America just going to keep cutting forever to appeal to certain swing Demographics, or ever get sane about their budget?

Oh yeah raising taxes will be very stimulative. Instead of rich people buying stuff the govt just gets the money so they can keep sending you goons money.

9. The Republican talking point is that

basic economics says you do not raise taxes in a recession. Then they disagree with the basic economics that you do not cut public spending in a recession. Why doesn't the press ever question their logic of pushing opposites?

how is that opposite? You don't raise taxes and you cut spending. Sounds reasonable to me. It's like if you ditch cable to save money every month it will be like you getting a raise at your job without actually getting a raise.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

I'm shocked, I tell you, just shocked!! :o

All these years, all I've heard from liberals is that only the rich got tax cuts...who knew??

I cured a liberal friend of the "tax cuts only went to the rich meme" quite easily...I told her to do her taxes using a pre-tax cut form from irs.gov and then do them with the newest tax form at the time, using the same income.

Her eyes about popped out when she saw the difference, and I never heard that particular complaint again.
