I think they are that way because they consider him an easy target. First of all he is a hawk and believes in a strong defense. Second, I will never forget the speech he gave when he was nominated telling the soldiers to hang in there help is on the way and the military loved it. Third is he worked for Haliburton which was not an oil company; but rather a service company to the oil industry. It was an easy target because in Iraq they got a lot of no-bid contracts. What the media failed to mention is their only competitor is Schlumberger, a French company, who is actually the larger of the two companies. Now with the French having sold nuclear stuff to Iran, and in general violating the UN agreement on the oil for food program, just which of the two companies would the US government give the business to? The choice was a French company or a US company and, of course the Bush administration was not about to give it to the French. They should have been happy that he did not tell the world all they knew about the bullshit the French were doing behind the scenes.
And finally, unlike Bush who was passive, Cheney called them on their bullshit with facts which the left detests. Recall how he spoke out against the Obama administration and the way they were handling the national defense. They cannot stand it when someone speaks out and the public kinows that he is telling the truth. Every time Cheney speaks out BO is hung out to dry.
If Cheney was 20 years younger, with a good heart he would be a great presidential candidate. The true colors of the left will come out when he dies and they cannot contain themselves from rejoicing.

Not only all that you mentioned....but Cheney is also extremely intelligent. That frightens them as much as anything else.
Liberals fear intelligence in the opposition.
Liberals are idealistic, have "lofty" thoughts and plans, and want peace, love and happiness for all. The problem is .... they don't know how to achieve it. They think that all they have to do is make laws, set up funding(that doesn't exist), throw out pixie dust over everything and poof!!! things will be as they wish.
Problem is....the pixie dust doesn't work.
While the Libs know how to come up with the ideas....just like a little child can imagine an evil creature in the closet....they have the imagination....but imagination doesn't make it real.
The Conservatives know how to think with practicality. And know that it takes thought, planning and hardwork to make it happen. They know that pixie dust doesn't do anything except make something sparkle temporarily and is a mess to clean up.
A Conservative is the child with a huge Lego set that sits down, figures out what to build with it, takes the time to construct it so that it is solid and effective.
